[opensuse-translation] Translation of man pages
Hi list, a debian french translator contacted opensuse french community to talk about perkamon (https://alioth.debian.org/projects/perkamon/) a (nice?) tool to manage translation of man-pages. So, I have a question. How is handle translation of man pages in openSUSE? I will have to look at that.

It is not done, simply put. In theory, it is handled upstream, but AFAIK, there is very little being done upstream, too. IMHO, not enough interest, no nice tools, who knows. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Project summary “This project contains scripts to manage translations of Linux man-pages with po4a. It currently contains an up-to-date French translation, other translations are welcome.” http://po4a.alioth.debian.org/ “The po4a (po for anything) project goal is to ease translations (and more interestingly, the maintenance of translations) using gettext tools on areas where they were not expected like documentation.” This method has to be used by a team or project, not by an individual attempting to translate a manpage. Someone has to create and maintain the pot file for each man page, then the translators can translate it. It seems that they translate a tar of a bunch of man pages (man-pages-3.24.tar.bz2), for which they generate the pot files and corresponding fr.po files. These packages, and the translations, have to be installed over the possible manpages of the same names, if the version is newer. Ie, those translations are not passed upstream and thus do not benefit the community - if I understand the process correctly. It is interesting. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
