[opensuse-translation] about update-desktop-files-screensavers.po origin
Hello all! Recently I've spend some time on full translation of update-desktop-files-screensavers.po file. There I saw a lot of records marked as comments of corresponding *.desktop file, for instance: #: /usr/share/applications/screensavers/julia.desktop msgctxt "Comment(julia.desktop)" msgid "Animates the Julia set (a close relative of the Mandelbrot set). The small moving dot indicates the control point from which the rest of the image was generated. See also the \"Discrete\" screen saver. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_set Written by Sean McCullough; 1997." So this description comments contain whole paragraphs of text and are really time-consuming for translations. But there is a problem: these comments DO NOT PRESENT in specified *.desktop files. Further more, these descriptions ARE NOT DISPLAYED anywhere around screensavers' configurator at least in KDE4 (BTW, can any of GNOMErs here confirm it?). These *.desktop files are located under /usr/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers, where most of the source pointers in update-desktop-files-screensavers.po lead (not all of them: as you can see from the example above, some point to the old location). So I checked the upstream kde package with the same result: KDE translations for these *.desktop files DO NOT CONTAIN such comments either. So, @Karl: what do these paragraphs do in update-desktop-files-... if they do not exist in *.desktop files themselves? Why do translation teams have to do really hard time-taking job with no displayable result? @Coolo (assuming you wrote merging scripts for this, if not, @author): even though I successfully found out the origin of these descriptions (xml files of xscreensaver package, which I had to install specifically for this case) I still do not understand why are they included here. I can't see if they are really DISPLAYED TO USER anywhere in the system either in translated or untranslated form. 1) Could you please clarify this issue described above? 2) Upstream file with translations for both screensavers and desktop themes has approx. 70+ kB size. openSUSE's update-desktop-files-screensavers is 250+ kB. Since it is kinda strange, would you mind to have (possibly separate) discussion on improving the merging script (at least with duplicates finding) to help other translation teams and save some of their time? You confuse something. If you see in the comment of the msgid, this is /usr/share/applications/screensavers/julia.desktop - which is part of gnome-screensaver. And these desktop files really include that long comments. Interestingly the whole package comes with very little upstream translations, no idea why. Perhaps _there_ is a bug. That gnome screensaver translations are not displayed in KDE is by design and not a bug. That gnome screensaver translations are not displayed in KDE is by design and not a bug. I answer your other point in a different mail to split your long post :)

KDE translates all strings the same and that's fine. For SUSE I wanted to avoid possible conflicts between different contexts (in KDE the context is clear), so I decided to make the name of the desktop file the context. Oh, I see. Again, since this is done intentionally there is no problem either.
So there is one tiny problem left: could you please check, on what stage the newlines from original xml-s get eliminated. See, in original file all wiki-links are separate lines, as well as "Written by..." line. But in update-desktop-files-screensavers.po msgid-s are just textflows with newlines at specific position, so link often get interrupted by newline right in the middle, and this is not really good for design. Sorry, it's appended to kdeartwork/kxsconfig.pot Yes, I've seen this file during the origial search, but it contains only few descriptions that present in update-desktop-files-screensavers.po, as well as descroptions for not xscreensaver savers and really a lot of configuration texts. Also some descriptions of the same screensaver differ in KDE and openSUSE. Am I right assuming update-desktop-files-screensavers.po is generated based on gnome-screensaver package? I am aiming forward to get involved in upstream translations to dramatically reduce my update-desktop-files-conflicts.po =) so please confirm. File a bug against gnome-screensaver. There are no new lines in desktop files comments, so it's a design problem of gnome screensaver

Upstream doesn't ship all those .desktop files. We create them when we build the package. The spec file contains: #%suse_update_desktop_file $file_root I guess someone thought it was commenting out the command, but it doesn't. I think it makes sense to make sure the name of the screensavers are translated (since they appear in the UI), so I changed the package to comment out the Comment key, so %suse_update_desktop_file should ignore them now. The xml files are only displayed by xscreensaver-demo or if you do "Setup" of a xscreensaver hack under kde. GNOME has copies of the code AFAIK. KDE translates these xml files as part of hacks.po upstream and not in desktop files.

The kde screensavers are an example where this makes a problem as 100 desktop files all "translate" "Display in Root". But then again: if it's translated upstream (and that's still the route to go), the problem does not appear.
