However, currently the it.po files contain
"Language: it\n"
but I do not know if this affects the resulting behavior.
If there are translation variants, yes. Portuguese can be for Portugal or for Brasil. Spanish can be for Spain or for the many different American countries (and maybe others, I have not checked if one exists for the "Filipinas").
