11.3 M1 - distorted graphic display
Hi folks, I've tried a couple of x86_64 installation on my hp 8714w with Nvidia 3600M, both default KDE and also Gnome using the NET CD and a usual installation procedure. Up to now, this mobile workstation has run previous 11.x and sled 10/11 (certified) ok and some other distributions too. But this time with 11.3 I got a distorted and unreadable grahical display right after the first boot from hard disk. I was able to use the safe mode login (once), but as soon as I tried to change the resolution from the installation mode 1280x1024 to the correct 1920x1200 (yes, I know sax2 isn't supported longer), the bad test display occurred. Therefore this error is critical and prohibit me from real testing. How should I address this issue further, throug the (confusing) Testopia (guide lines welcome) or to the normal Bugzilla? For all errors it's necessary to file a bug report. Also if you executed a test case when finding the problem. Please add the number of the bug report to the test case in case you executed one. Hi Terje, did you use the generic driver (nv) for the nvidia card or the vendor stuff? I myself have a problem using the Nvidia driver, but the generic driver works. In case you use the Nvidia driver you should file a bug against Nvidia and not against openSUSE. Additionally you can switch to a console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and check /var/log/message and or /var/log/boot.msg for a hint. Hi Jürgen, I tried also an automatic/default installation setup with exception for neccessary custom partitioning for my multiboot setup. I'm not sure if my problem actually is caused by the Nvidia vs nv driver or some xorg-x11 error. It also looked like the installation wasn't quite complete or finished when I entered consol mode with Alt-F1, because of a waiting message 'Checking/Updating CPU microcode - loading CPUFreq modules' instead of the expected login promt. Now I'm downloading the full DVD iso to try this also instead of the NET CD iso install. In previous cases, 11.2 included, I think I had to manually install the Nvidia proprietary driver (kernel module) afterwards using the YaST2 package manager. Now I'm not sure which one, Nvidia or nv the 11.3M1 installation did use. By the way, how does one verify if Nvidia or nv is used by the installation program, and how to select or change to the free 'nv' during the installation or from command line afterwards (what is the 'nv' package name)? Did you have to manually edit the xorg.conf afterwards (it looked like I had only the the xorg.conf.install available)? Rgds, Terje Jürgen Radzuweit wrote:

Hi, usually if you do not included the Nvisia repository the installation should select the generic Nvidia driver. Just check /var/Xorg.0.log you should find something similar like the following for the generix driver. (II) LoadModule: "nv" (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//drivers/nv_drv.so (II) Module nv: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 1.6.5, module version = 2.1.14 Module class: X.Org Video Driver ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 5.0 (II) NV: driver for NVIDIA chipsets: RIVA 128, RIVA TNT, RIVA TNT2, Unknown TNT2, Vanta, RIVA TNT2 Ultra, RIVA TNT2 Model 64, Aladdin TNT2, GeForce 256, GeForce DDR, Quadro, GeForce2 MX/MX 400, GeForce2 MX 100/200, GeForce2 Go, Quadro2 MXR/EX/Go, GeForce2 Integrated GPU, GeForce2 GTS, GeForce2 Ti, GeForce2 Ultra, Quadro2 Pro, GeForce4 MX 460, GeForce4 MX 440, GeForce4 MX 420, GeForce4 MX 440-SE, GeForce4 440 Go, GeForce4 420 Go, GeForce4 420 Go 32M, GeForce4 460 Go, Quadro4 550 XGL, GeForce4 440 Go 64M, Quadro NVS, Quadro4 500 GoGL, GeForce4 410 Go 16M, GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X, GeForce4 MX 440SE with AGP8X, GeForce4 MX 420 with AGP8X, If the vendor driver is loaded then a different module is loaded containing some version information. openSUSE only includes the generic driver, for the vendor driver you have to include the repository located at http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.2 Regards Jürgen Am Dienstag 09 Februar 2010 21:55:23 schrieb Terje J. I am sitting in China and prefer using bittorrent as of slow and unreliable network. But I cannot download milestone 2. I get "problem with tracker". And now after about 10% and 12 hours I have 6 days remaining. KGet say 50 days remaining. What to do? Wait for the release in June? /Lars -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org
