I haven't tried older versions of VMware Workstation, but VMware Workstation 8 (8.0.0-471780.x86_64) is definitely not installing out of the box. The "vmnet" module does not compile. Fortunately there is a patch / workaround, which I found on via VMware and Arch Linux sites:
