2.) With all of the most recent kernels (primarily any 3.*, but I've also been stung by a few late 2.3x ones, too), I have to add "nomodeset" as a kernel/boot argument, because I have an nVIDIA display chip in my laptop. This is due to the current nouveau device/display Xorg driver, and it's a well-known issue common to most of the current distributions. I'm sure it will eventually be fixed, and when it is, I'll then be able to remove that argument. But, for now, at least I can (generally speaking) get a display manager - I'm partial to KDE - up and running well enough to do some modicum of testing.
After manual editing the disk destionation aWith 'nomodeset' I was also able to boot Desktop 12.1 Gnome 3.1.4 in full 1920x1080 resolutionon on my Asus M4A89 GTD w/AMD 890GX graphic based machine. But it looks like it is still in Fallback mode (Gnome 2 like), as I'm not able to start gnome-shell in a terminal due to the error message "Unable to initialize Clutter". http://bildr.no/view/975070 Rgds, Terje J.
