plea for testing kernel modesetting with RC2 / radeon
As the final release of openSuSE 11.3 is impending I would like to see graphics modesetting work. It will deter us a lot of users if Xorg can not enter graphics mode: unexperienced users are not capable of resolving such an issue. The mainline strategy I have followed lately is to keep UMS (user mode setting) still work for a while which would require FreeDesktop Bug 34544 to be resolved (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34544). However this does already require setting appropriate kernel options (nomodeset, radeon.modeset=0). If you have an ATI graphics card please tell me your card model (f.i. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2700) and whether Xorg has problems initializing graphics mode. Thereby I hope to be able to infringe the problem to devise a new solution strategy; note: you must use the radeon display driver (as used by default) for testing KMS (kernel mode setting) - radeonhd and fglrx support UMS. Also write me your kernel version as returned by 'uname -r'. If you should only experience problems with some monitors this may be due to the EDID (extended display identification record) as to be found in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Then you can try to connect via an alternative connector (HDMI, DVI, VGA: all returning different EDIDs) or try to apply one of the two kernel patches supplied by Alex Deucher in this regard (perhaps you will see them in the final release). I plan to post additional information on deploying kernel patches and making commit requests at qa.elstel.com (This time simply use 'git apply --ignore-whitespaces xy.patch' on the kernel.src.rpm); see the thread at: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/process_bug.cgi to obtain the patches. If we all test it with RC2 then we will have comparable test results: very important as things with KMS have kept changing gradually since os11.2! the easiest and safest for HW testing is just using the LiveCDs (possibly copied raw to USB) without installing. http://mirror.zq1.de/opensuse/factory/iso/openSUSE-GNOME-LiveCD-i686-Build00... http://mirror.zq1.de/opensuse/factory/iso/openSUSE-GNOME-LiveCD-x86_64-Build... http://mirror.zq1.de/opensuse/factory/iso/openSUSE-KDE-LiveCD-i686-Build0001... http://mirror.zq1.de/opensuse/factory/iso/openSUSE-KDE-LiveCD-x86_64-Build00... The NET/DVD install parts could use generic vesa/fbdev graphics, and the 3D effect stress of KDE4 and gnome+compiz is missing anyway. Sounds good to me - I probably can shrink /home by 20 GB and squeeze in a second root partition for 11.4 anyhow. How are things looking for the "nouveau" driver on NVidia? I've never been able to get it to work right and use either "nv" or the non-OSS NVidia driver on my desktop. -- http://twitter.com/znmeb http://borasky-research.net "A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems." -- Paul Erdős -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org

actually, the latest proprietary driver is causing some trouble on both 11.3 and 11.4-RC1: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=648718 while the default nouveau one just worked on a notebook with Geforce Go 7700. also note that the above images are only candidates to be RC2, so might still see updating.
