Hello fellow testers, according to http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap , RC1 is going to be released in 4 days. My automated install tests showed all 4 main install-methods (DVD,NET,KDE,GNOME) working on both 32 and 64 bit... but only on hardware emulated by KVM. Also application tests were rather limited. So if you have a spare partition or computer, you could try to install any of the current (Build0669+) isos and report major bugs ASAP via http://bugs.opensuse.org to ensure a smooth experience for the less technical RC1 testers. You can get isos from http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/ DVD isos at my server: http://mirror.zq1.de/opensuse/factory/iso/ Note: if you use NET iso version, you need to press F4 on bootloader and edit the path to /factory/repo/oss - similar to what can be seen on http://www3.zq1.de/opensuse/video/openSUSE-NET-x86_64-Build0669.ogv otherwise you would get MS7 in spite of the current build number. I have been told that after RC2 only release-critical bugs will be fixed. That means that anything that will not prevent installation or software-updates, will not be adressed before the final release. So if you want to test 11.3, now is a good time. Well, I wasn't able to install any of two i586 M7 iso Build 0625 available at http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.3-Milestone7/iso/ 1) Trying to install the i586 DVD with Gnome desktop, caused after disk image Gnome [1] a YaST2 wrong checksum error 2) Trying to install the i586 NET iso, caused a Welcome warning that YaST was unable to find the correct control file, therefore using a fall-back one. Thereafter error cannot read license file. However, the shortly later available Factory NET iso Build0657 installed fine on the same computer. Therefore I expected the errors on the Build 0625 iso were found and fixed, and I didn't file any bug report here. On the other hand I have two other bug reports for 11.3 that I'm not satisfied with the interest in or activity to solve Bug 590960 - SDHC freeze Bug 593871 - CDMA not working Rgds, Terje J. new install, with absolutely no problem (same computer as before, bits, Gb ram) the delay I observed before was probably not openSUSE related :-( this time I installed kde and I'm writing from this install, I plan to keep using thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org

Where do we still need hal? It should be obsoleted in 11.3. On my M7 x86_64 dual core laptop installation I think when the machine stays idle for some time the CPU load and fan begin higher activity. A few months ago even more activity (one cpu up to 100% constant load) happened on SLED 11 after an upgrade of the X server. Possibly it was a screen saver that caused the problem. Any similar experience on M7? Rgds, Terje -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org

Can you see in the process list (e.a. using "top"-command) what causes the load? I've seen it on various distros on my HP dv9000z Athlon64 X2 laptop, and it was usually caused by a Java applet running a screen crawler or other small moving object, or by a runaway browser object (such as an Adobe PDF plug-in) that lost its mind and never actually appeared. I haven't stumbled across it in M7 yet, but will give it a try to determine if M7 exhibits anything unique/different. My M7 installation is 32-bit even though I have a 64 bit laptop, so my test "matrix" is quite limited. 1) Yes, using top the following cpu loads and processes arise: 51% beagled 38% dbus-daemon 22% hald As seen these eat 'one whole' of two cpu's on my relative highend HP Compac 8710w mobile workstation with Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9500 2.6 GHz, 3.8 GiB memory The cpu load fell down again when I start to use the machine again. 2) On another, (old and slow) AMD K7 stationary PC, model MS-6195, 500 MiB memory, with M7 i586 installed, top shows another variant the first minutes after login to Gnome: 96% cpu load for the prepare_preload process Rgds, Terje -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org

OK, so maybe someone from the gnome team can answer what's happening there. My guess would be that Beagle is collecting data for its search index.

I have two possible explanations for the load going down when you use the machine: a) CPU is clocked down while there is not much to do... check with "grep MHz /proc/cpuinfo" or b) the jobs are scheduled with "idle" priority - not sure how to check Do not forget to file a bug, when you encounter odd behaviour.
