[opensuse-support] ssd firmware update
Hi, I have a samsung nvme ssd and am looking to update the firmware. Does opensuse have a program to do this?? I was looking on google and saw that ubuntu has a way to do it, but I was hoping that opensuse has it's own, like the magician for windows. mike s -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

work around for my samsung ssd960pro m.2 and tumbleweed system: (from my own howtos) rough translated to english samsung ssd 960 pro m.2 http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/960pro.ht... http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/consumer.html firmware (iso) + firmware installation guide) usb stick clear and put a fat32 (gparted) on it -> make partition table -> make partition (all) fat32 mount /dev/sdh1 /mnt/usbstick unetbootin (i am not sure if this tool is still avalable on tumbleweed) choose iso file, it will be copy to stick boot your system with this stick, now you could update your ssd simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

That's a common misunderstanding. LVFS (or, fwupd as it was called for some time) is a distro-agnostic service for rolling out firmware updates to hardware components via Linux. Fwupd is available in the repos for both Leap 15.1 and Tumbleweed. On my machine it was preinstalled so I guess it should be on your's as well. Generally speakign the first step is to check [2] if updating your hardware is supported by it's vendor. Samsung indeed does so for NVMes. Second step is to check if Gnome Software or KDE Discover offer the update. If so, install it. Or if you want to go the CLI way: fwupdmgr get-devices fwupdmgr refresh fwupdmgr get-updates fwupdmgr update Hth, vinz.
