HTH Axel I tried that already, but the setting is not persistent: as soon as I leave this dialog, the setting is disabled again. Maybe I have to do that as root?

That is correct - once you select "All users may connect to this network" - NM should ask for root password (in my case it does). It needs the permission to write the password in plain text to: /etc/NetworkManager/system- connections/SSID file.

if you cannot get it done with your desktop NM GUI applet - you can also do it on the command line using: nmtui That can be run from command line as root using sudo - though it should also ask for root interactively when it needs it.

Those files are/should be RW for root only.

It is after I set the password in the WiFi security tab that I am asked for the root password, not after selecting "All users may connect to this network" .
