Thunderbird and Firefox refuse to open existing profile after upgrade 15.2->15.3
Hi, Yesterday I upgraded my sister's system from 15.2 to 15.3 After that, both Thunderbird and Firefox refuse to open te existing profiles. Gives the message "You are starting with an old version of <Thunderbird | Frirefox>". Which is an odd messages, because one would expect TB and FF to be newer, not older, after the upgrade... Anyone an idea how to solve this? regards, Jogchum Reitsma
Hi, So many possible issues. Why not try a Mozilla forum? Unless someone "knows the right answer" here, that may be your best bet. But first, take a look at the user/group settings (including NUMERIC user and group)of the profile(s) to make sure they are correct. On Monday, August 29, 2022 7:51:31 AM EDT Jogchum Reitsma wrote:

I would check if you have all the repositories activated. That changed quite a bit between 15.2 and 3 because of the shift to the sle base. You can try the --downgrade commandline option, like "firefox --allow-downgrade" But first backup in the rare case it goes wrong. It is strange, however, maybe worth a bug report if you find the cause. Hope this helps. Cor

regards, Jogchum Reitsma Just guessing: Could it be that the version check fails, since stock 15.3 is too old as well ? Mind, 15.3 is almost at its EOL. I mean. no downgrade happening, but simply FF/Tb finding a too old version of the configs?
Something else: Was the mozilla repo active? Then consider readding that with the proper URL -- Gertjan Lettink a.k.a. Knurpht openSUSE Board openSUSE Forums Team

Start with "sudo grep Firefox /var/log/zypp/history" to see which version (and from which repo) you had installed before the upgrade and after.

Yes, but sudo is not required, that file is "-rw-r--r--". It is possible that the previous install had the Mozilla repo active, and thus, used a newer Thunderbird version than the stock system. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Sudo is required, because /var/log/zypp is "drwxr-x--- 1 root root"

Hum. Works here without sudo, but I belong to groop "root". -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Well, if you have a non-standard configuration then you shouldn't offer advice about standard usage :) I confirm Adam's statement

Sorry for this late reaction, but we've been on (a very hot...) holiday. In the meantime the problem has solved itself: The version of TB and FF that came with the initial upgrade from 15.2->15.3 are indeed OLDER than the versions of the last update of 15.2.... Which seems to me counter-intuitive, but explains the messages of TB and FF. An update of 15.3 gave the correct versions, and the problem is gone. Thanks a lot for your help! regards, Jogchum
