[opensuse-support] amd graphics card on laptop and slowness
So I have been using this Dell Inspiron 15 5576 (laptop #1 below) and have not been generally happy with its performance. Sluggish, sometimes freezes, can't suspend to ram, and a few other minor irritations. Should run really fast with the amount of memory it has. I found a thread indicating maybe a problem with the graphics card? So I looked up my specs on Dell, and this is supposedly the graphics card I have: AMD FX 9830P Quad-Core Processor with Radeon R7 Graphics However, here is what the hardware info detects: # hwinfo --gfxcard 09: PCI 01.0: 0300 VGA compatible controller (VGA) [Created at pci.378] Unique ID: vSkL.gwUVE8uFOP6 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:00:01.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "ATI Carrizo" Vendor: pci 0x1002 "ATI Technologies Inc" Device: pci 0x9874 "Carrizo" SubVendor: pci 0x1028 "Dell" SubDevice: pci 0x07e2 Revision: 0xcc Driver: "amdgpu" Driver Modules: "drm" Memory Range: 0xd0000000-0xdfffffff (ro,non-prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xf0800000-0xf0ffffff (ro,non-prefetchable) I/O Ports: 0xf000-0xf0ff (rw) Memory Range: 0xfea00000-0xfea3ffff (rw,non-prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xfea40000-0xfea5ffff (ro,non-prefetchable,disabled) IRQ: 228 (276509 events) Module Alias: "pci:v00001002d00009874sv00001028sd000007E2bc03sc00i00" Driver Info #0: Driver Status: amdgpu is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe amdgpu" Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown 32: PCI 300.0: 0380 Display controller [Created at pci.378] Unique ID: svHJ.+ug88O0PpPA Parent ID: w+J7.XZwpGIabNM5 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:03.1/0000:03:00.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:03:00.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "ATI Baffin [Radeon RX 460]" Vendor: pci 0x1002 "ATI Technologies Inc" Device: pci 0x67ef "Baffin [Radeon RX 460]" SubVendor: pci 0x1028 "Dell" SubDevice: pci 0x07e2 Revision: 0xff Driver: "amdgpu" Driver Modules: "drm" Memory Range: 0xe0000000-0xefffffff (ro,non-prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xf0000000-0xf01fffff (ro,non-prefetchable) I/O Ports: 0xd000-0xdfff (rw) Memory Range: 0xfe800000-0xfe83ffff (rw,non-prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xfe840000-0xfe85ffff (ro,non-prefetchable) IRQ: 230 (55 events) Module Alias: "pci:v00001002d000067EFsv00001028sd000007E2bc03sc80i00" Driver Info #0: Driver Status: amdgpu is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe amdgpu" Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #15 (PCI bridge) Primary display adapter: #9 So it detects 2 controllers, is calling one of them an "ATI Carrizo" and the other one an "ATI Baffin [Radeon RX 460]". The Dell specs say it is Radeon R7 but opensuse is saying Radeon RX 460. Is this right? And also, is the amdgpu driver sufficient? I found this thread in the forums https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/528306-amdgpu-pro-driver-issue that seems to indicate I need to download the new amdgpu-pro driver. So I downloaded the driver from here https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMDGPU-PRO-Driver-for-Linux-... but I haven't installed it yet. I've tried the latest amgpu-pro driver with an Radeon RX 460 with Leap 15 on my desktop and had no success. But the amdgpu open source drive does quite well with Tumbleweed. But amdgpu-pro (the openCL -part) with Kubuntu 16.04.4 and Kubuntu 18.04 run nicely and noticeably faster on other partitions when openCL is used. cu Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

Well, the amdgu-pro driver totally failed with 42.3. I was able to get details on my hardware by going into Windows and looking it up. The 2 devices are 1 - AMD Radeon R7 Graphics, from Dell, the device id is 9874, which is a Wani [Radeon R5/R6/R7 Graphics] device. 2 - Radeon Rx 560 Graphics with device id 67EF, which is a Baffin [Radeon Rx 460/560D Pro 450/455/460/555/560] device. I can't determine if the amdgpu-pro driver is supposed to work with that dual device setup or not, but it did not work with 42.3. But I still run into slowness in 42.3. I am going to try your solution and install tumbleweed, using the regular amdgpu driver, and see if that makes things run faster. At least I know that if I go to get another laptop, it is best to avoid anything with AMD graphics. My Dell XPS uses Intel graphics, and it runs really well, no problems, fast and smooth. I never had to do anything to mess with the driver. -- George Box: 42.3 | KDE Plasma 5.8 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | 32GB Laptop #1: 42.3 | KDE Plasma 5.8 | AMD FX 7TH GEN | 64 | 32GB Laptop #2: 42.3 | KDE Plasma 5.8 | Core i5 | 64 | 8GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org
