What font are you using? Maybe choose a different one? /Edit/Preferences

noto-sans 10pt changed to Nimbus Sans L 10pt and it works, tks

will also try reinstalling noto-sans and report

zypper -v in --force noto-sans-fonts returned to nnoto-sans 10pt and xterm now works properly.
