[opensuse-support] how to activate an USB disc drive?
From a friend I got the use of a HP USB compact DVD disc rewrite drive. It is recognized without problem by his windows setup but at my Tumbleweed I see no activity. Regardless which USB port you plug into? Does it have its own power supply, or require power from the USB port? Sometimes USB ports won't provide enough power for a mechanical external storage device.

It has an external power supply which I haven't yet used. Will try it out. Thanks for the tip. -- opensuse:tumbleweed:20180627 Qt: 5.11.1 KDE Frameworks: 5.47.0 - KDE Plasma: 5.13.1 - kwin 5.13.1 kmail2 5.8.2 - akonadiserver 5.8.2 - Kernel: 4.17.2-1-default -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org
Hi, i recognized since about 3-6 weeks a long delay in my tumbleweed for recognizing any usb device. (up to 3 minutes) so maybe you have to wait longer? lsusb will show how/or if it is recognized do it first without pluged in, then with plugged in, and then check the difference. the ID gave you a nice search string for googel.... and maybe your user should be a member of the dealout group (i am not sure if necessary for usb, for some other ports its required) simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

A little late because I did not have the right transformer. But the external power supply did the trick. -- opensuse:tumbleweed:20180703 Qt: 5.11.1 KDE Frameworks: 5.47.0 - KDE Plasma: 5.13.2 - kwin 5.13.2 kmail2 5.8.2 - akonadiserver 5.8.2 - Kernel: 4.17.3-1-default -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org
