Digitizing video's
Hi, My father-in-law sent me a videotape, asking if I could digitize it form him. He's a great father-in-law (a great father too, btw...) so I'd like to help him. I remembered I had a Hauppauge WinTV card lying around, but alas, it's PCI, and I have no PCI interface on my motherboard, only PCI-X. Now I see some S-Video-to-USB cables, which are supposed to do the digitizing trick. Low cost, some 20 €. Chipset is UTV007. Linux support in general is described at https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Easycap#Making_it_work_4; but that page was last edited 5 years ago. It seems to me that the support presented there is very experimental. Any chance I would get this to work with TW or Leap 15.2? There's also the VTOP-Ubuntu-Audio-Capture-Device, which is mich more expensive ($ 55, + shipping from US to the Netherlands). regards, Jogchum

I would like to know how to do it, before my video tape machine dies. So I'd like to know how you finally do it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. I got three boxes of Betamax taking up space in my one-room flat! Been meaning to digitze them for about twenty years. Might just go the easy option and die first. gumb

I have lots of Betas too, but 8-10 years ago I only have one machine left, and I'm sure I could find better recordings on the net than anything I could get off my ancient tapes with my ~28 year old last Beta Sony made to sell in USA, anniversary model, without onscreen menus, with touch screen remote too cantankerous to use for anything but clock setting, if that much. -- Evolution as taught in public schools, like religion, is based on faith, not on science. True enough, but I have a tape where my late parents are and I want it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. try professional dealer. For a small number of supports it's working (I digitalized 16mm cello film from my dad) http://dodin.org/piwigo/index.php?/category/4811 jdd -- http://dodin.org

Have you think about do it without computer? connect the recorder to a tv with build in harddrive or external usb-stick and record there? things to check: a) how to connect to tv b) did the tv record this signal (most times hdmi will not be recorded), but analog input will be. so check this first before buying an adapter. c) did a software play/translate the recorded file format? i have done this with a now about 10 year old technisat tv and some of my video 2000 tapes. simoN -- www.becherer.de

I don't have any. I have a media center that plays, but does not record analog signals. Only digital via aerial. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)

PCI-X or PCIe? PCI should work in PCI-X Slots, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI-X#Mixing_of_32-bit_and_64-bit_PCI_cards_in... HTH, -dnh -- panic("Lucy in the sky...."); linux-2.2.16/arch/sparc64/kernel/starfire.c
