[opensuse-support] FreeOffice 2018 Textmaker superscripting suppression
I had previously asked for assistance in suppressing superscripting in FreeOffice 2018 Textmaker, and got no reply. Probably because free software comes with no assistance. So after much searching and futzing around, I found out how to do it: With a document open, go to Tools>Options>Edit. There are a bunch of check-boxes, one says "Superscript ordinal numbers" --uncheck that box and then click OK. That seems to have done it for all documents. To be on the safe side, you may save the opened document, but I don't think that's necessary. If you find any gotcha in this procedure--something I forgot or left out--please write a line or two here and correct me. Reminder: If you are going to use the document in another word processor, or send it to someone who does not have Textmaker, save it in Microsoft Word format! --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

What is FreeOffice? It is not an openSUSE package. Most people use LibreOffice, I have never heard of FreeOffice. It doesn't even have a wikipedia page. Maybe this one: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SoftMaker_Office> It is proprietary software, so it is supported by them. Not "Free" in the sense of the word used in Linux. License: Proprietary (freeware/registerware) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)

As you know, there has been a long-running thread about a substitute for Libre Office Writer. I had suggested Textmaker Open Office, which, as you say, is proprietary. I have no complaint about that--if it is what you need to do the job, use it. FreeOffice is a free (no money) version of Softmaker Office suite, and Textmaker is the word-processor component of it. It turns out that the software in FreeOffice Textmaker is the 2018 version of the program which has been updated for 2020 and now requires a fee--apparently yearly. The FreeOffice version requires no fee and is good forever. The FreeOffice package is an rpm file which will create the three items in the office suite: Textmaker, PlanMaker--a spreadsheet, and a presentation package to create slides. I believe that there are some limitations to the spreadsheet program, but for my purposes--to display a spreadsheet prepared by someone else, probably on Windows--is fine. So it is for me a perfect substitute for LibreOffice Writer, which I found has undesirable characteristics. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

No, I'm not aware of that. Do you have a link to the thread?

I haven't noticed any issue with LO :-? The only issue I have is that I can no longer generate PDFs using the internal fonts of the reader, thus having to embed all fonts making the files bigger. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)

No, I'm not aware of that. Do you have a link to the thread? I don't have the first post, but I answered "Any subs for LibreOffice?" where the correspondents were listed as Community support for Fedora users, and I suggested Free Office from OfficeMaker, and there is an answer in the

This thread seems to have been from "Community support for Fedora users" so I must apologize for sending this post to the OpenSuse list. The series seems to have started on 11 August, if anyone cares to look. (I keep an eye on Fedora since it is one of the founding rpm distros.) --doug

I had mentioned that under certain circumstances of cut and paste into LO, large black almost-squares appear in the copied text. Others mentioned other gotchas. TextMaker can save in pdf's directly, BTW. I believe the free version does also.

Thus there is no way we can know here about that long running thread. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)
