Printer driver HP Color Laser 178nw
Hi, I am trying to install a HP Color Laser 178nw Cups (and also lsusb) sees the printer, but I can't find a driver for it. The list of printer cups, and also the HP support website, is long, but I no Color Laser 178nw. On the HP support site no driver can be found at all, regardless the choice of OS. The openprinting.org site also shows no Color Laser 178nw. It was bought very recently, so I wouldn't think it's a too old model. Anyone an idea how to get this beast to work? Thanks i advance, Jogchum

+1 It supports AirPrint (as many current printers): https://openprinting.github.io/printers/ So you don't have to install ANY drivers.

I have been caught by problems like that before, so the advice is, check for Linus support before purchase. Are you using Leap or Tumbleweed? If Leap, you should add the printing repository, and update cups and drivers (specially the hplip packages). Maybe you are lucky and the new version supports your printer, but I fear that if even HP say nothing about support (in their Linux printing site, not the general site), then you are out of luck. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. Funny thing is, it seems they have no driver at all, be it for Windows, Mac or Linux. At least, that's my conclusion from what HP says. I'll contact HP Support Thanks!, Jogchum

no need for a driver, it's probably a pdf printer any direct send is ok I nearly always use any apple or hp color / n&b postscript driver and it works. however, one can't probably control all the printer parameters jdd -- mon serveur usenet: dodin.fr.nf c'est quoi, usenet? http://www.dodin.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Usenet.Usenet

Try manually selecting your operating system. If your operating system is not listed then HP may not provide driver support for your product with that operating system. This url I did not find, so thanks! It discusses the MFP170nw, which would seem to be close enough. It is reasonably recent, too (2022-05). But the driver url, mentioned in #8 of the discussion leads me again to the "We were unable to find drivers for your product." page. I think I have to contact HP Support. No. It means you have to select the OS and version, *manually*. Linux and SUSE. It probably tried to detect the system and failed or got something it doesn't like. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from Elesar, using openSUSE Leap 15.4)

Well here it says Software and drivers for HP Color Laser MFP 178nw Choose a different product Detected operating system: SUSE Linux Choose a different OS Maybe it depends on some version or other or whatever domains you have enabled in noscript or something ... who knows FWIW the download link for the driver it gives is https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/MFP170/uld-hp_V1.00.39.12... I have no idea whether that is what you need.

What happens if you click on 'Choose a different OS'? ON my m/c I see two boxes. In the first I select Linux and then in the second one of the choices is SUSE Linux.

1. Follow the link above 2. Choose a different OS => Linux, SUSE 3. Click on Driver-Product Installation Software 4. Click on Basic Drivers 5. Download the .tar file; open it with Ark into a directory, or open it in a terminal 6. In a terminal, switch to root, find the noarch directory and move into it As far as I can tell, at this point you should run the shell script named package_install.sh. There are a number of binaries in the folder which I suspect the script is supposed to install. (Note that there are also a number of .pkg files in the folder; these are software package files which as far as I know are only for unix platforms, not supported by openSUSE - but I could be wrong about that.) Hmm, I tried that, but id not manage to get it working - quite possibly because I never used (actually, never heard of it) and don't know how to activate it. I have the latest CUPS/hplip I think, as a TW-user. Therefore I decided to go the HP-driver route, and that works like a charm. So, for now at least, I think I'll leave it that way.
