openSUSE,
thanks a lot for the current new release 15.6. ty 1230 UTC 12 June.
On the main page, the link at the top takes you to the 15.5 portal. I've been all over the site, and it seems there is only one way to reach the download page for 15.6: Go to Portal:Installation/Download the latest release and click on 15.4 (someone forgot to update this page 2 releases ago??). This link actually takes you to https://get.opensuse.org/leap/15.6/
Additionally, when you click on the link to fetch a torrent file, the browser popup says you have chosen to download a .iso file, not a .torrent file. Just ignore that, you are actually downloading the .torrent file -- however, the browser thinks you are downloading an actual ISO, so it suggests the incorrect action (eg. load the file into K3B, or whatever). As of 1255 UTC, the Network Image torrent is not yet registered with the tracker, though the .torrent file is available for download.
It is easier to download it at https://get.opensuse.org/leap/15.6/ You have a choice between .torrent and ISO For me it was ISO on a USB stick it boots OK. But I have to backup before installing it. On 6/12/24 14:56, Darryl Gregorash wrote:

Of course it is, but how many people will know to start there? The website "begins" at https://en.opensuse.org/Main_Page and it is next to impossible to find your way to get.o.o from there.

Thanks, I will try to remember this for any future issues. It seems the webadmins are already on top of this, as many of the links have now been updated, the most important of which is the one that says "Current regular release" and appears nearly everywhere.
That said, also make clear that you're not seeing cached data.
By this, do you mean "clear your browser cache and try again", or something else?

https://get.opensuse.org/leap/15.6/#download if you prefer downloading with a web browser instead of a dedicated downloader that can automatically pickup from where it stopped because your dog tore your computer plug out of the wall, or some other connectivity breakdown. Also get it from the very same place it has been for many moons, regardless of version, the same place YaST, Zypper and the installation system get it: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.6/iso/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.6/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/ http://download.opensuse.org/ There you find choices of arch, installation type NET or regular (DVD), and supporting sha files. You'll note some files there go by multiple names: BuildID# Current Media For each arch all three are the same binary to burn. I'm rather surprised that relatively few people actually get the ISO files from the torrents. Once a torrent is well-seeded, anyone downloading that file can see his/her download capacity reached within seconds -- much faster than what one can usually see from a single source.

Have you heard of bookmarks, favorites or browser history. Anyone with any significant experience attempting to to *download* ought to be able to guess right on first try, then a few clicks.

Zypper dup works so well there are many openSUSE users who online upgrade, some various periods before GA is available or announced, needing only a modest zypper dup post-release. Others do NET installations, so only need to download in advance either as little as installer versions of linux and initrd, or one small CD .iso, all from download.opensuse.org. These cut down on potential efficacy of torrent. My broadband download speed is the lowest commonly available from typical "cable" providers in USA, yet fast enough it matters not. Under 10 minutes to download a DVD .iso is trivial. The http://distro.ibiblio.org/opensuse/ mirror of download.opensuse.org provided today's official 15.6 x86_64 DVD .iso in 6m 0s. We have choices. ;) -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks! Felix Miata

Where is that statistic published? Read before responding. Why do you think I said "unlikely to remember", and not "will not/do not remember"? I am simply basing my remark on my personal experience with casual users, of which I have plenty.

They should learn they're not using Windows. Sometimes you remind me of the shareware author back in the bad old days of FidoNet, who refused to document his code because (his words) "anyone who cannot read code should not be using a computer." Just what makes you think that the casual computer user will stop being a casual computer user, just because they switch from Windows to Linux?
Have you heard of bookmarks, favorites or browser history. Anyone with any significant experience attempting to to *download* ought to be able to guess right on first try, then a few clicks. Yes, and I have also seen the bookmarks and favourites lists for a great many users, who have not yet discovered the notion of organizing their shit into categories. But you put emphasis here on those with "significant experience"; how many of those would you put into the category of "casual users"?
Finally, for those who wish to help out in the distribution by seeding a
Zypper dup works so well there are many openSUSE users who online upgrade, some What in hell does zypper dup have to do with seeding torrents? Besides, consider someone who installs a brand new piece of hardware right before booting up to do a distro upgrade. Can zypper make sure that hardware is properly installed and configured? No. Can you do that booting from a distro ISO? Yes. But I suppose you'll have a fancy answer for this one too, one which suits the needs and abilities of the experienced, but ignores all those who are not.
No doubt you will have some response to all of this, but you won't get any further response from me. See above re: FidoNet dude.

Don't forget that you can download using a metalink aware downloader, which has two advantages: it maximizes speed, and does automatic checksum verification. I use aria2c, a CLI tool. aria2c --check-integrity=true "http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.6/iso/openSUSE-Leap-15.6-D..." (I prefer not to use the openSUSE-Leap-15.6-DVD-x86_64-Current.iso link, to have the name of the actual release I downloaded recorded). Also, a trick. On some machines, the copy to usb stick seems to make the system slow. To avoid that, do: dd if=openSUSE-Leap-...iso of=/dev/sdX oflag=direct bs=16M status=progress The "oflag=direct" impedes caching the image in ram and filling the file cache, starving other file operations of cache.
