Hi I am trying to record a video from my webcam. Guvcview does a nice job recording the video but is unable to record sound. I have a logitech c920 webcam and I've tried several other programs with similar or worse results. Perhaps the best so far other than guvcview is perhaps obs studio but the lag in the video is terrible. Just wondering if anyone else has successfully recorded a video from their webcam including sound. Is anyone, attempting to fix guvcview as this seems to be a problem since 2021? Any thought or suggestions would be most welcomed. Thanks

Thanks Stephan I like the program although I had a bit of an issue getting it to work initially but I can't figure out how to record with it. Is it capable of recording? If so, how do you get it to record?

Did you try to see the output of your webcam with vlc (use the one from packman). The documentation mentions that you can store the stream on disk by pressing the Record button. -- fr.gr. member openSUSE Freek de Kruijf

Thanks Freek I did try vlc and again I got no sound. I was beginning to think that perhaps it was the webcam so I tried another webcam, same result. Here's what I have found out. For some unknown reason the Logitech C920 mic. is not picking up any sound. However, the mic is detected by the system. The mic was working quite well before. I have tried another C920 webcam and had the same result, it is detected but no sound is being picked up by the mic. I have tried an old Logitech P4000 and that was fine. I was able to record sound in audacity using it. I know others have the same experience. It was my brother who on his computer couldn't get any sound who alerted me to this issue. Is this a kernel or pulseaudio issue? Does anyone have any advice or solution?

I'm not a developer although I dabble with it every now and then. Think we need a little more info. Could you run these commands? cat /etc/os-release uname -a pactl info also alsa-info.sh and upload the info to paste.opensuse.org and paste the link here. -- /bengan

A bit late reply. Went away for the weekend. I can't say what's gone wrong but you don't have a device in /dev/snd for your second card. See below. You should have /dev/snd/controlC2, /dev/snd/hwC2* and /dev/snd/pcmC2*. Maybe something went wrong with udev. If anyone else sees this and has deeper knowledge of Leap and audio can provide more specific advice. Come to think of another thing. Pipewire. Turn it off and see if that helps. I remember when kernel 5.* was the default in tumbleweed there were problems with pipewire. I had serious problems with bluetooth and pipewire in early 2022. disconnect your webcam systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.{socket, service} run (as root) journalctl -f connect your webcam post your output of journalctl -f -- /bengan

Thanks Bengan My mind has been elsewhere for the last few days. I've just tried running the command: systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.{socket, service} and got the following error message: Failed to connect to bus: $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS and $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not defined (consider using --machine=<user>@.host --user to connect to bus of other user) That said, I was able to record a decent video with sound using zoom. Sadly although guvcview indicates it is receiving sound, no sound is recorded when saving the video. Anyway, I can work with this. Thanks very much. I will add the output to running: journalctl -f Oct 04 08:00:02 kernel: usb 3-1: new high-speed USB device number 35 using xhci_hcd Oct 04 08:00:05 kernel: usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=082d, bcdDevice= 0.11 Oct 04 08:00:05 kernel: usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 Oct 04 08:00:05 kernel: usb 3-1: Product: HD Pro Webcam C920 Oct 04 08:00:05 kernel: usb 3-1: SerialNumber: FAC65D4F Oct 04 08:00:05 kernel: usb 3-1: Found UVC 1.00 device HD Pro Webcam C920 (046d:082d) Oct 04 08:00:05 kernel: input: HD Pro Webcam C920 as /devices/ pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:08:00.3/usb3/3-1/3-1:1.0/input/input66 Oct 04 08:00:05 mtp-probe[18177]: checking bus 3, device 35: "/sys/devices/ pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:08:00.3/usb3/3-1" Oct 04 08:00:05 mtp-probe[18177]: bus: 3, device: 35 was not an MTP device Oct 04 08:00:05 mtp-probe[18195]: checking bus 3, device 35: "/sys/devices/ pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:08:00.3/usb3/3-1" Oct 04 08:00:05 mtp-probe[18195]: bus: 3, device: 35 was not an MTP device Oct 04 08:00:05 rtkit-daemon[13103]: Successfully made thread 18197 of process 13097 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by 'xxxxx' RT at priority 5.

I've had decent luck with obs-studio at least on my setup. Occasionally I do something unusual and then load the recording back up in kdenlive after to resync the audio. But I do strange things like converting Video to Audio and back which add latency. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

Thanks Simon I tried recording video with guvcview while playing the sound through audacity and doing a screen capture using simplescreenrecorder. It was somewhat successful but it is too much for my brother who is new to Linux and just finding his way around. He would like a simple solution.
