Hi,
I am trying to install a HP Color Laser 178nw
Cups (and also lsusb) sees the printer, but I can't find a driver for it. The list of printer cups, and also the HP support website, is long, but I no Color Laser 178nw.
On the HP support site no driver can be found at all, regardless the choice of OS. Err, what is https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laser-mfp-170-prin...
I came acros this url already, and It says
Software and drivers for
HP Color Laser MFP 178nw Choose a different product Choose a different OS
We were unable to find drivers for your product. Try manually selecting your operating system. If your operating system is not listed then HP may not provide driver support for your product with that operating system.
1. Follow the link above 2. Choose a different OS => Linux, SUSE 3. Click on Driver-Product Installation Software 4. Click on Basic Drivers 5. Download the .tar file; open it with Ark into a directory, or open it in a terminal 6. In a terminal, switch to root, find the noarch directory and move into it
As far as I can tell, at this point you should run the shell script named package_install.sh. There are a number of binaries in the folder which I suspect the script is supposed to install. (Note that there are also a number of .pkg files in the folder; these are software package files which as far as I know are only for unix platforms, not supported by openSUSE - but I could be wrong about that.)
HTH. (Oh, also, if you are using openSUSE's iptables firewall, there is a script to run which opens a port for the printer to use.)
--dg 15.4/KDE Plasma
Ah, I got it. I was distracted by the message in the eurl that says "We were unable to find drivers for your product. "
Downloaded the .tar file, have to wait till I have access again to the system concerned (it's not my own).
It is better if you try first the route Jiry Slaby said instead of installing the proprietary tools. Just make sure you have the most recent Cups and hplip you can get (in Leap, printing repo)
Hmm, I tried that, but id not manage to get it working - quite possibly because I never used (actually, never heard of it) and don't know how to activate it. I have the latest CUPS/hplip I think, as a TW-user. Therefore I decided to go the HP-driver route, and that works like a charm. So, for now at least, I think I'll leave it that way. Thanks to all for you advice! regards, Jogchum
