It looks like you aren't using subpixel anti-aliasing. You have grey only anti-aliasing on screenshot.
Aha. You are correct. (1.jpg). SUB-PIXEL ORDER was set to NONE as defaulted. I had not changed it.
Default for subpixel-order on Xfce is "rgb".
If I change the order from NONE to RGB, I do get the same problem as Andrei (though it doesn't look quite as severe). (1.png)
