I assume that the package database is somehow corrupted. What can I do to correct this problem? If it's the rpmdb: rpm --rebuilddb
Thanks, Knurpht!
I found the "zypper clean -a" command, which fixed about half the errors. But I could not get any further, tried all the zypper ref commands with no success (even though the man page indicates "refresh" can rebuild the db; that is apparently something different).
The zypper repository database. Different thing.
However, using rpm to rebuild the database allowed zypper to remove the old version entries. All is good now.
Thanks again.

Sent my reply directly to Knurpht rather than to the list - my bad.
Also, thanks Patrick and Felix for your helpful suggestions, both of which would have probably worked. I confess I never really learned rpm, have always gotten by with YaST/zypper.
Zypper uses rpm to do the actual installation of each package. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)
