The computer was not compromised, IMNSHO (maybe his Amazon account was, but that is different and unrelated, unless there are more unknowns). He simply pointed the browser to <https://localhost:631> instead of <http://localhost:631>, got a security warning and freaked, because about the same time he got the mail from Amazon. There is no relationship. Try it yourself. The warning is normal, it is a self signed certificate, and has to be ignored, or switch to normal http. He is not the first person to be surprised by that security warning from Firefox. Do try yourself.
