[opensuse-summit] Roomie Board
So, Jos tried to get this topic going a while ago with a suggestion to create a mailing list for people to sign up to, but that suggestion seemed to have died a rather unceremonious death... :-( On May 1, we'll be formally announcing the registration is open and the discount codes to our Caribe Royale hotel is now available. Rooms are $129 each for 1-2 beds. Sofa beds are also included in every room. Additionally, villa suites that can sleep up to 8 people (3 beds + sofa bed) will be available for $179, but realistically 4 people. That can be a significant savings for both the individual and for us (funding-wise.) The more our funded people room together, the more money we have available for funding more people to come to the Summit. Depending on how you calculate it, a person could end up staying in the hotel for as low as $25 or $50 per night. We *want* to encourage people to room together, especially those we will sponsor for travel (assuming we have funds for that.) But telling people to room together is one thing, knowing where to find people in search of roommates is quite another. I was thinking we should just create a "Rooming Board" on our website, but on the technical side, there is no database running the website that can store/manage these listings. We could link to a wiki page, but as Jos pointed out, it requires login, which will create a barrier for some people. Let's discuss realistically now how to resolve this opportunity. Incidentally, this "solution in search of a method" will probably also be needed for our oSC pages which is running the same setup as Summit. Hello, Without having a db its quite an isssue I guess. But maybe we can use something like http://www.tinymce.com/ Its a JS wysiwig tool. We can create a table to start with. And then interested users come in and start filling in the empty spots. /S On Apr 17, 2012, at 10:09 AM, Bryen M Yunashko wrote:

Can you create a sample for us to see how it works? I'm guessing from what you're saying, this solution doesn't require a database. If so, I'm game to try it out. Bryen

Hi Bryen, I don't think we should sponsor people to come to the conference that are unwilling to log into our wiki. Or which barrier are you talking about? Sponsored attendees was just one example. We should be making it easy to reach out to each other for roommate options regardless of whether you're sponsored or not. The event will not be exclusive only to those who are in the openSUSE community and use the wiki or any other openSUSE login component. Too bad our infrastructure requires the novell/suse account, not everyone is happy with that. Then again, we have to be realistic, we can't overhaul all our infra all the time. Let's see how Shayon's tool works and if that's a solution. If it isn't, let's set up a wiki page and ask people afterwards if it worked for them... If not, we can change things. /Jos (always in favor of quick solutions over perfect ones)

Why cant we create a wiki form page. People I assume are applying for sposnosrhsips, filling up the form is should be a requirement. Have a look at this http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC_ideas Also, I completely agree with Thomas with regard to registering on the website. Regards Manu Gupta

Ok, let's then just set up a wiki page for this. Anyone up for making a nice, usable template?
We are just looking for a table right? And will that be managed, that being said how many people does a room fit? And what kind of rooms are there? /S
1. 1 King-sized bed with sofa bed $129 + $16.12 tax 2. 2 Queen-sized bed with sofa bed $129 + $16.12 tax 3. Villa Suite - 1 King-sized bed, 2 queen-sized beds, 1 sofa bed $179 + $22.37 tax
Above rate is each night. Up to people to figure out the actual per-person rate depending on how many people in the room.
Each bed = 1 person unless people sleep together in bed, so 1. = 2 people, 2. = 3 people, 3. = 4 people (or up to double each room type.)
Once we have a page set up, we need to link to it from the website. Has anyone made something yet? pls :D
I did create one here - http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Summit_Planning/Room_Board . But how is information should or needs to be showed now ? /S
Look at the page and see if it makes sense to you. Then at least you guys (the team) can already start planning your own hotel :D
Am wondering if there should be a column/per room for gender...
Thanks! Bryen
