[opensuse-summit] mailing lists for conf visitors
I know we don't want more lists. Yet here I am, asking for a total of 4 more lists. Serious. First of all, the summit and the conference need an announcement mailing list. That's basically an official SPAM list where you put people on who are interested (just a box on the website where they enter their mail address, no actual registration in indico needed) and who are registered. Why? - those who are interested but not sure yet need not register - you can easily ping them next year: new conference coming! If you think it doesn't work, maybe not for you. But it does work for quite a number of people. Me, for example. No, indico registration is no substitute. I know we can extract mail addresses from it but it's far les convenient, error-prone and doesn't work for those who just want to stay updated. And I want people to be able to (un) subscribe more easily. Yes, it's a very low-trafic list, 10-15 mails a year or so. But it IS important. We COULD have one list for both conferences, but I prefer separate to not spam people with info from both. It should be moderated of course. Then, both conferences should idealy have a opensuse-X-participant list. I've seen this at other confs and it is a great way to let the participants talk to each other to arrange eg travel or hotel together. No, the other openSUSE lists are no substitute - not all the visitors to our conference are on -project or even CARE to be on it. Anyone who subscribes in indico should be subscribed to this list. We mass-unsubscribe people a month after the end of the conference/summit to not bother those who won't participate next year. So I'd like to ask for the creation of: opensuse-conference-announce@opensuse.org opensuse-summit-announce@opensuse.org opensuse-conference-participant@opensuse.org opensuse-summit-participant@opensuse.org (maybe without the opensuse- part) It'd be nice if we could have this quickly, esp the summit-announce, so we can get people to give their mail address for that on the summit.opensuse.org website when we announce on Thursday. But I'm sure we can temporarily collect addresses if we don't manage that?? Thoughts? Jos

I agree with the points, but find this proposed list confusing. * I'd like to suggest changing x-announce@. to x-news@. It just sounds friendlier that way. This is obviously an opt-in list, and not restricted to only those who register. Your proposal for this is a good one. * x-participant. This one I'm not sure about. We can send an email directly from Indico to all participants of a specific event. I don't see the need for creating a new mailing list for this. The registrants are, by default, on a mailing list already. Therefore, there is no error-prone situation in making sure all registratns are fully informed on important conference-related knowledge. The idea behind the participant list was that the participants can talk to EACH OTHER, as opposed to this being a one-way-from-us-to-them list. They can discuss logistics like sharing train, taxi or car; sharing hotel rooms; tips on pretty things in Prague etcetera.

Okay, I get it now. Sort of like the neighborhood grocery store bulletin board type thing. I've seen other projects use the wiki for that, such as a page to list people seeking roommates, etc. The drawback of a mailing list is it assumes everyone is on that list from the beginning. Thus, someone who joins in later after a particular discussion misses some context or opportunity. Whereas, publishing on a wiki is more "permanent" meaning it isn't dependent on whether you were already on ML or not. For example, if someone posts on the ML in June "I need a roommate" and someone else joins the ML in August, they'll miss that roommate search. How about for this purpose, we create a link on the Summit website called "Community Support" and link it to a wiki page where people can add themselves to a list and make comments, etc. As for suggestions to see around a city, Summit has a Location page and we intend to add more "sightseeing" info on it. We've done things like that in the past for oSC too. Would that take care of your intentions? It surely would. But it'd have to be open - don't make them make a second account...

Why don't you use mailchimp or some similar service for spam lists? :) They are great for sending out info and can even integrate with our RSS feeds, you can track returns, have nice multipart mails, wordpress plugins etc. etc. All you want is right there...
Then, both conferences should idealy have a opensuse-X-participant list.
Whats wrong with using the general conf/summit list for this? Henne -- Henne Vogelsang http://www.opensuse.org Everybody has a plan, until they get hit. - Mike Tyson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-summit+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-summit+owner@opensuse.org

Looking at mailchimp :D created an account, been playing with it. It's not horrible, but quite a bit more complicated than just a mail address... And it's hard to manage it with several people, it seems. Moreover, I can't just add people automatically to this (people who register should be subscribed without a confirmation mail send to them). It's OK-ish, just - mailing list is simpler... Why go for another tool if we can just use our own, familiar stuff?

The one we use to plan our conference? not sure if we want that list suddenly get flooded with stuff like "is anyone traveling on day X"... I like Bryen's suggestion to use a wiki more.
