Hi to all! I don't know if this subject belongs to this list, but here it goes..... I have a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz with 1G of RAM and instaled the SuSe 7.3 Professional distribution. The installed system is very unstable and once and a while it just reboots without a warning. I installed the stable kernel 2.4.20 and disabled APM in bios and in the kernel configuration. Now only ACPI works. The crashes remained. The behaviour remains the same if i boot in failsafe mode. Any ideas ? I also noticed (with top) that the memory used is growing in time. When the system boots there is 126M used and after 3 hours it has 800M used with the same processes. I also noticed that the biggest RSS process value is 11M. Any ideas ? Hello As some of the ppl wrote before me it is adviceable to install a more recent version of SuSE on such a new hardware. Also the growing memory is normal, the buffered and cached part of the memory use is growing in the time as you are using the system, it is a normal linux behaviour to use the whole physical memory at its disposal. But it does not affect the performance of your computer the same way as M$ Windoze does. It is also adviceable to give an important amount of swap space, I regulary use 1,5 Gig on three different swap partitions (512 MB each) - of course on three different HDDs. On the other hand the instability may be due to a hardware issue such as a faulty RAM module or not appropriate FSB setting. It is not recommended by SuSE but it may be useful to compile your own kernel, the 2.4.21pre6 is the latest, and try to see the system's behaviour with the new one. But basicaly I have to agree with those who adviced to use 8.1 instead of the 7.3. Try to download the ftp tree onto your HDD and create the bootdisk kit (5 FDDs) or write the boot.iso to CD and boot from it. Choose the install from local drive and follow the necessary steps. But of course the price of the 8.2 to come will not be -I hope- a problem when considering a possible solution. It's worth to wait for it.. :) VV
