Hi,
this is a brief heads-up concerning kernel updates: SuSE Linux 8.1 and 8.2
will have kernel-updates within the next few minutes (maybe an hour) on
the ftp server in the directories known for regular updates.
These updates are the first kernel updates that are installable via YOU.
SuSE Linux 8.0 has a small bug in Yast2 that causes some information in
/etc/sysconfig/bootloader to be unreliable after installation. This
information cannot be retrieved from the system, and manual interaction
might be necessary. By consequence, it is not reliable enough to provide
kernel updates for this distribution.
I will create directories in the kernel directory in
/pub/suse/i386/update/* with appropriate notices/READMEs there.
The updates for 7.2 and 7.3 are still about to be built and tested right
now. Some userspace update packages are necessary for these distributions.
We will publish an announcement as soon as all update packages are
available.
Thanks,
Roman.

Does it work already? Where is the kernel for 8.2 located? I didn't find a kernel in one of the subdirs of /pub/suse/i386/update/8.2/rpm nor did I find a kernel with a Yast Online Update. Al

Not yet... I was a little too fast. 8.2 kernels are about to be synced to the ftp servers, but the 8.1 kernels had a little defect that needs to be cured. To get that right: the kernels work, but there is a missing part that enables the you automatics. We'll have to fix this, as I don't want to publish an update that doesn't work (who wants that...). Well, anyway, the 8.1 kernels are available for (manual) download on ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/8.1/kernel/2.4.19-20030618/ the ones for 8.2 are in ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/8.2/kernel/2.4.20-20030618/. Not that much of a surprise, but the updates for 8.2 in the directory above are hardlinks with the files that are loaded via Yast Online Update. The directories will be visible shortly... Please be patient. Roman.

Al
I noticed when I ran YOU today that it only had a i386 version, while the one I have installed is i586. Should I be at all concerned about the difference(s)? I haven't installed yet, waiting to hear any thoughts on this first. Thanks. -- Greg Macek | Senior IT Manager Marketing Resources, Inc. it-guy@mrichi.com | http://www.mrichi.com

Right now, I can't verify if this is security-relevant since I'm not familiar with that specific change. To my knowlege, it is not included, no.

Roman.
Thanks SuSE, more correctly thanks Roman and the Other Developers - this is by far one of the biggest steps towards end users I have seen in the linux world in a couple of years, in fact our own sysadmins did not even like doing kernel updates / upgrades and now they don't have to YaST will do it for them. THANKS AGAIN SuSE once again _YOU_(pun intended) have shown how much you rule!!! Roman Drahtmueller wrote:
