I will have to revert to kernel-default-2.6.11.4-21.8.i586.rpm :-(
You can remove the "joystick=0" parameter altogether. Its strange, I thought we did not change the snd_intel8x0 module in this update. Ciao, Marcus
Hi, I'm running SuSE 9.3 on a DELL Inspiron 8500 notebook with all updates applied with fou4s.
This kernel update broke sound:
nimrodel:~ # rcalsasound start Starting sound driver: intel8x0FATAL: Error inserting snd_intel8x0 (/lib/modules/2.6.11.4-21.9-default/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Ha! That did it, works fine now. Funny! That line was "inherited" from SuSE 9.1. I wonder why it choose to break down today...

Weird, yes. But thanks for the tip, that cleared the problem here. The problem was my fault. Or rather, it was my fault not reading carefully the error logs. The main error reported was this: nimrodel:~ # rcalsasound start Starting sound driver: intel8x0FATAL: Error inserting snd_intel8x0 (/lib/modules/2.6.11.4-21.9-default/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) It said "Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter". I jumped too fast on the "Unknown symbol" part. The kernel log (or dmesg) showed: Sep 3 14:39:54 nimrodel kernel: snd_intel8x0: Unknown parameter `joystick' Sep 3 14:39:54 nimrodel kernel: load_module: err 0xfffffffe (dont worry) which was clearly saying to me that parameter `joystick' in the line loading snd_intel8x0 was unknown: options snd-intel8x0 enable=1 index=0 joystick=1 I was too thick to notice what it was really saying to me. My excuse is that I was in a hurry to leave O:-) There is nothing broken in the kernel, no symbol missing, except the weird fact that it worked till now and it choose to complaint about that parameter with this update. Weird, but not important. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDGk3StTMYHG2NR9URAv0UAJ9WvoQCLoVpnkaFmPeKwcupECWOiACghBHO uOjpD9mZF1LQcvGaXgo83q4= =hV8u -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

This problem existed all the time 9.3 is out - I guess you just didn't notice it ;-) and you also didn't read the release notes (the downloaded one, not the "old" one from CD/DVD) where this should also be mentioned. I entered the problem to bugzilla while SUSE 9.3 betatest already (#73747), but the only result was a discussion if the kernel or the sound people should fix it ;-)) I don't know if this problem is fixed for 10.0 :-/ Regards, Christian Boltz -- Wer etwas "Narrensicher" nennt, unterschätzt die Narren. X-) Didn't know what to take out... it is set as a "reply" to the announcement made in the RO list.
But now back to the relevant content:

I don't remember about the release notes right now. could be. The funny thing is that it has worked till now, since I installed last march. Well, not exactly. I see I wrote a note for myself in the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. Right after install (an upgrade from 9.1) sound did not work, Yast was unable to set it up right. So I copied the sound line from 9.1, I think: options snd-intel8x0 ac97_clock=0 ac97_quirk=-1 enable=1 index=0 joystick=0 # # W60f.iC9KKoQ5aqD:82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio # alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 but it did not work, I got that error: # Starting sound driver: intel8x0FATAL: Error inserting snd_intel8x0 (/lib/modules/2.6.11.4-20a-default/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) # y en kernel log: # Apr 24 01:01:44 nimrodel kernel: snd_intel8x0: Unknown parameter `joystick' # Apr 24 01:01:45 nimrodel last message repeated 5 times # # a pesar de que ya no est lo de joystick. # Faltaba un depmod, ya arranca el sonido. The last two lines translate: "even though joystick is not there" and "a depmod was required, sound starts now." My notes are cryptic even to myself, but it seems that I tried to remove the joystick token, did not work (or perhaps I set it to 0, don't know), but it finally worked after running depmod. What I do know is that it has worked with the "joystick" word in there for months, till this update. I have not touched that configuration, unless some Yast script did.
I entered the problem to bugzilla while SUSE 9.3 betatest already (#73747), but the only result was a discussion if the kernel or the sound people should fix it ;-))
Interesting ;-)
I don't know if this problem is fixed for 10.0 :-/
I can't check, I don't have the bandwidth to participate, unfortunately.
