Hello list! I want to begin to use iptables but I don't known how should I configure the Kernel. I installed SuSE 7.2 (Kernel 2.4.4) and I make following change in the Kernel: cd /usr/src/linux make xconfig option: Networking options/Network packet filtering (replace ipchains) set to Y make dep make clean make bzImage make bzlilo Then I booted the computer and use the new Kernel but some thing is wrong: root@linux:/var/log > iptables -L -v -n iptables v1.2.1a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?) Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded. root@linux:/var/log > iptables -F iptables v1.2.1a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?) Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded. where´s there the error??? Thx a lot! Herbert

There are more configuration options there. In particular, you need to have the options which API in the packet filter should be used. Among other options, you will find the switch for ipchains as well as iptables. Make both a module and load the module as you wish (iptables.o), then it should work. The option that you have turned on may not have an actual effect on the kernel configuration - it just made other things visible to chose from.
Thx a lot!
Herbert
Thanks,
Roman.
