yes,
and what packages do i need to install,
minimum install (about 230MB) with iptables and others etc. tripwire/seccheck/SuSEfirewall2/snort etc. etc.
the harddrive is 500 mb. Is it possible to use a floppy to start and do the rest via internet ( no cd Drive )
buy a cdrom - support SuSE - buy the distro - total cost less than US$100

YES!!

...the disk space and your choice of packages depends hardly on your needs. So it is a little bit tricky to say if 500mb will be enough. For a simply firewall without any proxy facility it should be enough. But please take care that your logifles do not fill up your hdd...

YES!!

- but you'll need to be a bit creative. The machine probably won't boot from any of the pre-packaged boot-floppies, and you may have problems running with any of the prekompiled kernels. What I've had to do when installing on hardware that old is boot from an old SuSE distro floppy (SuSE 6.2 is still sitting on my shelf...) and then run the new yast installation from CD or over the network. Then it's time to reconfigure the kernel for the older type of processor and compile. For specific purposes like that, on that old hardware, I'd probably try for the more specialized distros. My personal favourite is floppyfw, http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/ Bjørn -- Bjørn Tore Sund Phone: (+47) 555-84894 Stupidity is like a System administrator Fax: (+47) 555-89672 fractal; universal and Math. Yes, you can try, though you probably don't have enough RAM. There are pointers here, to installing with less RAM though : http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/lmuelle_suselinux_internet.html Finally YaST2 adds fair amount of bloat, but try the minimal install. Box requirements are 486, 64MB RAM and minimum 400MB disk, but 1.5GB recommended. Rob
