kernel 2.4.0 is "just" a hacker release. I tried to install iptables. I received back the following error message: can't initialize iptables 'filter': iptables who? (do you need insmod?) Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

I may note that redhat 7.0 ships with a pre 2.4 kernel that from what I hear works quite well. While I definately wouldn't classify it as ready for primte time, with some work it'll probably work for most people quite decently.
