Hi, are there any Suse advisories for KPF (part of KDE3) and kghostview? KDE recommends an update to KDE 3.0.4. At http://www.suse.de/de/private/download/updates/81_i386.html (I use Suse 8.1) and within YOU I could not find an update of KDE. Any advice? Matthias

I gave up on waiting for a binary in YOU for 3.03 to fix SSL. It has been a month since I asked about it. I downloaded the ones in Suse supplimentary. Then I upgraded to the binary packages at KDE for 3.04 without a problem. Later!

If I start YOU on my 8.1 machine I see KDE 3.0.4 Updates. The packages must be there now. Maybe you wanna try again. If I look on my fileserver which mirrors the updates from gwdg.de for 8.0 I see lots of rpm packages containing KDE 3.0.4 but in YOU there is no KDE update, as there is no patch description file yet. also, I have two machines both running YOU from that directory tree; one of them shows me the NVIDIA updates the other one does not. both machines are suse 8.0. bye, MH
If I look on my fileserver which mirrors the updates from gwdg.de for 8.0 I see lots of rpm packages containing KDE 3.0.4 but in YOU there is no KDE update, as there is no patch description file yet.
also not on ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/suse_update/8.0/patches/ bye MH

I mirror the updates from ibiblio.org and it has no short symlinks to the real names either. I was under the impression that SuSE discontinued this 8.3 frontalobotomy some while ago, obviously not quite. There's no patch description there (yet). I find manually adding any new packages to a simple list and using rpm -UvhF `cat list` is very much faster and more reliable. If anyone wants the list (for 8.0) and some short scripts with it email me. YOU is wasting more time than it saves. Relieing on those patch files being present as well as accurate seems to be too dangerous to me. The latest fou4s beta (http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/beta/) contains support for such patch descriptions. I find manually adding any new packages to a simple list and using rpm -UvhF `cat list` is very much faster and more reliable. I thought so some time ago (and wrote fou4s). I don't think that this really works - having 10 machines with 4 different suse versions may not seem to be so much, but it is a lot of work to keep them up to date without help. Patch descriptions are not always correct or up to date which is very bad, but this is not very often and normally rather quickly fixed. With Lars' gpd.sh plus fou4s you could even work without them, but it is not so comfortable (e.g. know why the patch was put on ftp).

Obviously not everyone operates on the same lines, you're right that multiple SuSE versions would be more trouble. What I would find really useful is something which also places downloaded packages into a local mirror which can be burned on cd and can also be filled up with rsync, and which uses the local mirror in preference to downloading. It must function without patch descriptions, although they may be used if available. It should run considerably faster than YOU. Handling the kernels, people and supplementary trees would be a real bonus. I admit not having yet tried fou4s. Personally the patch descriptions don't tell me why the patch is there, I already know that ages beforehand by reading the "pending" sections in SuSE's advisories and skimming over bugtraq. You are talking about gpd.sh (patch description generator) + fou4s ;-) Although I use wget and not rsync (yet), it is pretty fast. The latest beta (including gpd.sh) can be found at http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/beta/. Gpd.sh should work out of the box for the supplementary tree, just edit the example config file (GpdList=) to select the updates you want (KDE, Gnome, XFree). I admit not having yet tried fou4s. Personally the patch descriptions don't tell me why the patch is there, I already know that ages beforehand by reading the "pending" sections in SuSE's advisories and skimming over bugtraq. Two years ago I would have agreed with you, but now I'm much too busy to remember all this things. The patch descriptions are a very nice bonus from SuSE (I miss this with debian, although I must admit that I haven't digged into this very deep).

A little off topic, but - how do you mirror/sychronize the SuSE web site? In my case only the 8.0 updates directory. I haven't been able to find a way that doesn't want to copy everything again. Therefore - I stopped. I have several machines and it would be so much easier (and on the SuSE web site) if I could maintain my own updates. Appreciate info on this thanks. - Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mathias Homann" <admin@eregion.de> To: <suse-security@suse.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 15, 2002 8:00 AM Subject: Re: [suse-security] Sec. You could use "mirror" to keep a local copy of the ftp directory or "fou4s" to automate your updates. Best regards, Michael

When I looked yesterday, the patch description files referred to short file names, but in the rpm directory only long file name rpms were available. try fou4s beta, there is a "patch description generator" in there. ( gpd.sh ) gets recursive listings (uses rsync for this), and parses them for package-name-version-release[.something].rpm I have scripts which list the newer than locally installed ones, too. (for the rpm -Uhv `cat ` trick). or just use fou4s normaly after that. wroks with the update/ tree, the supplementary/ tree, and most of the peoples/ tree. cheers, Lars
