Hello list, Installed server with SuSE7.2, DHCPD with in dhcpd.conf a nameserver on the internet (ISP). Although firewall is not configured yet, and forwarding is still 0 (cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward), the system is building a connection to the ISP with every request from a client on the network (eth0). System: eth0 (DHCPD is listening here) and ippp0 for Internet. How can I avoid the machine building a connect to ISP for every dhcp request?? TIA Leen

My guess is that the dhcpd is looking up dns-entries. The request would occur on the server, so no forwarding is needed. Have you configured an local nameserver for all local zones? Peter

So what about your default route ? If it points to your ISP (means to the interface shows up to him) - every network traffic, that not goes to localhost (127.0.0.1) should cause a dialup. Try netstat -rn to list your default route. The default route is listed in the last line. If there something like 0.0.0.0 192.168.10.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ippp0 ^^^^^^ then the dialup interface is default. Why do you need a dhcpd.conf with a nameserver on the internet (ISP). Try to change the nameserver IP to localhost -> so you've no traffic to outta networks! Michael Appeldorn
