Hi all! I would like to set up a VPN between two SuSE Linux computers (v7.3). Can anyone recommend a good howto or software package? (Free of cost, if possible.) I looked into the VPN-Mini-Howto from linuxdocs.org, but got stuck after a while because pty-redir doesn't seem to like kernel 2.4. And anyway, it looked rather like a home-brew than a proper solution. Currently, I am going through VPN-Masquerade-HOWTO. Is that good? Any tips? Thanks! And as a side note (but less urgent): Is there an quick'n'easy'n'secure way to establish a VPN between a Windows XP computer and SuSE 7.3? Where to start reading? Best regards and thanks for your time, Michael

I think this is no problem with kernel 2.4, it's a general problem with linux devs. On 2.0 kernel I took the pty-redir source and replaced "pty" through "tty" (I think it was only in one or two places) and then it worked fine.
And as a side note (but less urgent): Is there an quick'n'easy'n'secure way to establish a VPN between a Windows XP computer and SuSE 7.3? Where to start reading?
Same problem I am on right now, thought whether there is a software for Windows that can tunnel GRE. iproute2 does. :) Tobi
If you have the money :-) there is a simple, yet powerful out of the box
solution from sonicwall (www.sonicwall.com). they produce firewall
appliances with integrated VPN functionality. I use it to connect two branch
offices to the main office. If a user from a branch office tries to connect
to the fileserver in the main office, the sonicwall builds up an encrypted
tunnel using IPSEC. The great advantage is, no configuration is needed on
the server/client computers. One Sonicwall costs about 1000.-DM. If you
don't have the money or if you want to learn about VPNs, then FreeSWAN IMHO
is the right choice. Not that easy as sonicwalls but more powerful and
customizable.

Thanks! I am surprised I didn't stumble over that before. It seems to be the proper tool. Regarding the VPN-Mini-Howto: I found a nice posting in the securityfocus.com mailing list. It describes how to get rid of the (IMHO ugly) pty-redir tool. Nowadays, pppd can do it all itself - just read for setup instructions: http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/91/162447 To the SuSE people reading this list: IMHO, it is NOT ok, that there is no documentation regarding VPN and SuSE. Clearly, sdb.suse.de or portal.suse.de should pull out something when I search for "VPN". VPN is the next step after providing easy setup for TDSL/ADSL. Best regards, Michael
