susefirewall2 on a suse 7.2 with kernel 2.4.16 STRANGE things
Hi, me and some friend are both running Suse 7.2 with kernel 2.4.16 and a TDSL connection for internet access. Whenever we access something on the net, a ping to whatever running in parallel goes up to the skies. Or in more detail: running mtr www.t-online.de (for example) in a shell, accessing website with heavy data makes the ping times for all hops skyrocket. With NO traffic I have ping times for all hops of around 40; when I start surfing they go up as high as 500, sometimes even more. On MY firewall (p3 450, 128m ram) the ping times go back to normal as soon as the traffic dies down. On my friend's 'wall the ping times skyrocket as high as 1000 or higher, and stay there for at least 10 minutes after the traffic has ended! Sometimes they skyrocket even without traffic! Imagine how nice that feels when you're playing online games via that kind of 'wall... Friends' machine: p1 166, 64m ram...

Hi, as far as i know, this is not a problem of the firewall but the DSL technologie used. Since DSL is transferd over coper with many errors ( like interferences, ... ) data is encoded in frames and this in "super" frames. in this super frames data is garbled... e.g. bits 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 become 8 2 7 1 5 3 4 6... so if there is a short error and some bits are not correctly transfered the error correction ( hamming distance > 2 ) can correct the errors. this scrambling unscrambling needs time... which is the main reason why adsl uses another errorcode with voice-over-adsl... furthermore when transfering much data, the time delay becomes longer... and so ping time is going up... but should be only in the time when data is transfererd... i dont know why it should be for 10 more minutes ???? i dont know if you can do something against this behaviour, sorry... if someone is interessted i can search for the descriptions of the mentioned things. hope it helps... greetings walter. --

have a look at the Advanced Routing howto there are some examples which you can adapt HTH -- Togan Muftuoglu "By golly, I'm beginning to think Linux really the best thing since sliced bread." (By Vance Petree, Virginia Power)
