Hi. I'm having trouble looking for a SuSE-working antivirus solution. I need to set up an av solution on my smtp server (i.e. filtering inbound or outbound mail). I only have had time to try 2 AV by now: AVP for Linux and Trend Micro InterScan. Both failed to install/work: AVP gives "segmentation faults" (I think it is compiled against glibc2; I'm using SuSE 6.4 distro which comes with... glibc perhaps? Aren't they compatible?). InterScan directly refuse to install (it says it must be compiled on Red Hat 6.0; perhaps it could be faked because it checks for /etc/redhat-release file but I don't want to make these kind of "experiments"). They aren't opensource so I haven't got the sources for re-compiling. In summary, both are intended for Red Hat, which seems to be the more popular distro (indeed, it was, at least long time ago, and perhaps it is now). Isn't there a good AV soft which correctly compiles in SuSE 6.4??? I prefer hearing some fast responses from you than keeping wasting my time downloading &"try-installing" other non-SuSE AVs... Thx in advance. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ** RoMaN SoFt / LLFB ** roman@madrid.com http://pagina.de/romansoft ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Roman, TrendMicro just released a version for SuSE 6.4 , I haven't had the chance to check yet, but as I talked to TM, they stated, there arent't any know probs. I do not know if they released it on their international server - try www.trendmicro.de. The software was ported here in Munich, Germany AFAIK. Shouldn't generally be a problem (I kept installing RedHat rpm packages on SuSE-6.4 systems like a king for a while...).

Good luck, the maintainer of amavis works for SuSE: Rainer Link (Hi Rainer! :-). http://www.amavis.org/
Thx in advance.
You're welcome!

Well, AVP - renamed to Kaspersky Anti-virus - works on my old SuSE 6.2 test environment (I can run very easily several MTAs for testing with AMaViS) and SuSE 7.0 Pro. Moreover, rainer@rlss2:/opt/AVP > ldd AvpLinux not a dynamic executable As it's statically linked, I do't think it's a libc/glibc issue. But please check if /lib/libnss_compat.so.1 is installed on your system, it comes with nssv1.rpm. The issues with Trend Micro are well-know to me, as I got a very early beta last year :) But Trend Micro ported it - in cooperation with us - to SuSE 6.4 and 7.0 some weeks ago. They send me InterScan VirusWall 3.6 Build 1122 for SuSE which works here on my SuSE 7.0 system - I haven't tried it on a SuSE 6.4. Trend Micro's german web site (www.trendmciro.de) shows InterScan VirusWall for RedHat 6.2 and SuSE 6.4 - but not www.antivirus.com. Huh? Folks: I only wanted to thank all of you who has answered my AV related questions (former thread and this one). Lastly, I'm evaluating Trend Micro InterScan SuSE 6.4 version (downloadable in Trend Micro's German site, NOT in the international one :-?). A first problem I'm noting is that RELAY has been magically enabled by default :-(((. I was using the Relay_Mail_From feature on Sendmail and this one and other features seems to be lost :-(. I don't like that.... I think Amavis' policy (using a sendmail's "mailer" which points to the scan engine) is much better. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ** RoMaN SoFt / LLFB ** roman@madrid.com http://pagina.de/romansoft ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, there is a chapter in the AV refmanual dedicated to this issue. I have just seen it... Blame me :-( Anyway turning relay on by default is not good... AV should keep (&use) local sendmail configuration. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ** RoMaN SoFt / LLFB ** roman@madrid.com http://pagina.de/romansoft ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, according to Trend USA InterScan VirusWall for SuSE will be released Q1 2001, see http://www.antivirus.com/corporate/media/2000/pr120700.htm for details.
I think Amavis' policy (using a sendmail's "mailer" which points to the scan engine) is much better. Well, the best way would be using the libmilter API introduced in sendmail 8.10 (but it's still marked "for future rlease" - which means basically it's somewhat beta and has changed between 8.10.x and 8.11.x. IIRC Eric said in his talk it will change for 8.12 again but it should then be final ...).

Hi,
I'm having trouble looking for a SuSE-working antivirus solution.
I've made good experience with SuSE 7.0/sendmail/AMaViS/McAffee for Unix: To get McAffee runing I had to install the old libc5 library (a1/shlibs5.rpm) and AMaViS needs some unpacking tools like unarj, unrar, zoo ,... I also had to download 'freeze' (another decmpressor) and 'maildrop' (a MIME handler). I configured AMaViS with options --with-virusdir=/tmp/virusmails (/tmp has its own partition. OK, this is paranoid, I know) and --with-notifysender=no (If not, this effects nice avalanche when a virus is spread over a mailing list). Sendmail.cf has to be changed, to use AMaViS as local mailer (see www.amavis.org/amavis.html). Virus DATs are updated constantly by cron job. This configuration is up since a few month and actually grabed some viruses before they were downloaded to the workstations, where nevertheless virus checker are installed. So, this is working well for me, perhaps for you, too. well over here I use amavis to scan the mail and as for the actual anivirus is use antivir and sophos blinks for both can be found on the amavis hmoe page http://www.amavis.org On Tue, 19 Dec 2000, RoMaN SoFt / LLFB!! wrote:

I'm using the "Amavis + McAfee" tandem in my SuSE Linux 6.4 SMTP server without problems. What's more, I've been using them since the first installation, when the server was a SuSE Linux 6.2, and now it's gone through a couple of updates. I'd recommend this solution, as McAfee seems to be one of the best antivirus suites out there, according to the complete analysis a Spanish magazine made about the most popular antivirus software.
