MozillaFirefox 1.0.8 update for SUSE 10.0
Hi there, just installed MozillaFirefox-1.0.8-0.2.i586.rpm and during the process I got "su: user /dev/null does not exist" Of course /dev/null does exist, a minor bug in a script somehwere? Nevertheless the rpm can be installed. Malte

Malte, maybe a minor bug in your eyes? ;-) You say "user /dev/null does not exist" - - that has nothing to do with the file /dev/null. Do you have a user /dev/null defined in /etc/passwd (or LDAP or whatever source you use when logging in)? When the given user is not found, rpm takes root instead. That why it installs. No bug in my contacts, see below. BUT, problem solved, logged in again at the console, NOT using su -l and the message didn´t appear again. Maybe faulty su-setup, no clue. Sorry for the inconvenience. Looks like an error in the postinstall script of the package - just reported as https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=168538 ;-) Have a look at the bugreport if you are interested in the details of the error ;-) Regards, Christian Boltz --

Heaven, a real bug report, hopefully it won´t be considered to be overdone... ;-) It just seems noone at SUSE expected someone might use su - to manually install RPM packages. Regards Malte

*LOL* Bugzilla has nearly 100 bugreports from me about the upcoming SUSE Linux 10.1 and about 200 against older releases and some other stuff - including some bugreports against bugzilla itsself (it wasn't that broken luckily ;-) Therefore "Heaven, a real bug report" sounds _really_ funny ;-)
It just seems noone at SUSE expected someone might use su - to manually install RPM packages.
My guess is that it's a simple typo ;-) Regards, Christian Boltz -- "Microsoft spel chekar worgs grate!"

No, you got me wrong :-/. When you are told "su: user /dev/null does not exist" you do not need to look for the *file* /dev/null, but for an *entry* *in* */etc/passwd* or whatever your user authentication needs. This is what I wanted to say. I did not say you need a user called "/dev/null" or that I do not believe you got exactly this message - I think this is an error in the rpm. [snip]
su: Benutzer /dev/null existiert nicht (plain English: su: user /dev/null does not exist)
I know this happens with some rpms (with different user names) when the builder develops with his own user name and does not change the names for his rpm. The error occurs even when the rpm is installed as root. I see it often when using synaptic as a frontend for apt. Regards, Werner
