Well, I tried to install the updated kernel [8.2] twice, but no go. First time was remotely via ssh running YOU, which installed and ran mkinitrd, but on reboot it didn't boot (Get to work earlier than planned). I could only get it to boot with the previous kernel (used Rescue CD to reinstall). Second attempt was via rpm at the console, same result. I also installed it at home, and it worked here. Slightly different hardware here at home, but the major difference is I am running a software RAID 1 for root and /home at the office and not here at home. Any ideas? I already reported this to feedback. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. Well, it installed twice, but would not boot both times, so I got fairly proficient using the Rescue Cd an mounting my system and reinstalling 2.4.20-100. 101's error was , after the graphical Grub screen, the black screen with Loading Linux................................... at which point the screen went black, keyboard could not make it respond, no output on any tty, nothing. Any ideas? -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. Any ideas? Try to boot without vesa console (video=extended), so you can get the error message.

Good idea. I was trying to remember exactly what came after Loading linux......... I made a little progress. I used vga=normal boot parameter, and I could finally see something. This was the message. Loading linux................................... BIOS data check successful Uncompressing Linux... ran out of input data ---System halted I am guessing it is having a problem accessing or reading the initrd, which is on hda4, a 40M ext2 /boot partition, or the root partition, which is on /dev/md0. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate the help. I am back on k_athlon-2.4.20-100 again, until I can figure out how to get the kernel to install. Maybe I should try k_deflt? Or compile from the sources, though I doubt if I compile from the exact same source it will solve anything. TIA for any help or ideas. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. I remembered this was the first time I had updated my kernel since I had updated to 8.2 from 8.0. On 8.0, I used Lilo. I switched it to GRUB when I updated to 8.2. I had already installed the latest 8.2 kernel while in 8.0, so it didn't need updating. Anyway, since everything I found pointed to a lilo problem, I checked and cleaned out old lilo files in /boot (probably did nothing), as well as reinstalled GRUB to the mbr (via YAST's bootloader module). Then, I went in, updated the kernel again, and it booted right up without a problem. Thanks for all the suggestions. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
