2.4.21-168 kernel RPM's vs. 2.4.21-169 sources
I'm puzzled that the kernel update RPM's provided for SuSE 8.1 are for version 2.4.21-168, but the kernel sources are for version 2.4.21-169. Looking here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/8.1/kernel/2.4.21-20040105 We find these RPM's: k_deflt-2.4.21-168.i586.rpm k_athlon-2.4.21-168.i586.rpm k_smp-2.4.21-168.i586.rpm etc. ^^^ But these sources kernel-source-2.4.21-169.tar.bz2 ^^^ Am I being needlessly compulsive in wanting an exact match on the version numbers? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Warren Jones | To keep every cog and wheel is the first Fluke Corporation | precaution of intelligent tinkering. k_deflt-2.4.21-168.i586.rpm k_athlon-2.4.21-168.i586.rpm k_smp-2.4.21-168.i586.rpm etc. ^^^
But these sources
kernel-source-2.4.21-169.tar.bz2 ^^^
Another strange thing: 8.1 = kernel-2.4.21 8.2 = kernel-2.4.20 Is there newer developement on 8.1 than on 8.2? And k_smp-2.4.20-102 does not provide quota-module. Philippe

When doing configuration management for multiple release branches it is sometimes better to fix an old release and sometimes better to replace the old release with a later one where the fix can be applied in a more simple way. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, the release managers have to decide in that situation. Because of that it can happen that sometimes older distribution versions have later versions of some part than newer ones. This is quite normal in software release management. I can't tell you what the reason for 8.1 was to change to a 2.4.21 kernel. But I assume the people that decided to do this change actually had a reason doing so. I would suspect that this has something to do with SuSE 8.1 being the original basis of SLES8. On SLES8 the kernels where updated with Service Pack 3 to make SLES8 more hyperthreading aware and I suspect they have released the same kernel update for 8.1 to get more feed back from the general user community. - As I said this is my personal suspicviion and somebody from SuSE may give you a better answer. That is exactly the point. SLES8 is based on 8.1, and some of the changes got merged back into the 8.1 package base after release of SP3. Olaf -- Olaf Kirch | Stop wasting entropy - start using predictable okir@suse.de | tempfile names today! ---------------+
