Can someone tell me the difference between Nagios and Snort? Which one does the best job in monitoring Networks? Thanks, Bruno

Nagios is a "network" monitor, in that it monitors the machines on your network to tell you which services are up and which are down. It monitors your service status. SNORT is a network intrusion detection system. It monitors traffic on your network, regardless of which host it came from or is destined for, looking for patterns it might recognize as attacks.

Since they are used for almost completely different things, "best" is not a meaningful question. SNORT is a very strong NIDS, well regarded by most users. I have heard that Nagios is a good service monitor, but there are other alternatives, and Nagios does not have the near-total dominance of its niche that SNORT does. They monitor entirely different things. Nagios monitors the availability of services on a network, whereas Snort monitors potential threats to network security.

Both and neither. I run both of them on our network, as they perform different functions. Both of them require some tuning and housekeeping, but perform their respective functions pretty well. best wishes. Gideon.

Hi Bruno, Snort and Nagios are not comparable. Because they both have different functions. Snort is an IDS (Intrusion Detection System) and Nagios is a network monitoring system. You can check systems and ports if they are up and running. Regards, Joop. I advice to look at: http://www.snort.org/ http://www.nagios.org/ On Thu, December 8, 2005 11:26 am, Bruno Cochofel wrote:
