I think you wanted to enter CLASSPATH=/usr/java/jdbc/pgjdbc7.3.jar Also here you better use CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/usr/java/jdbc/pgjdbc7.3.jar as it is possible that the classpath is defined elsewhere before this statement (I'm not a Java programmer).
