the proftpd daemon from SuSE-7.1 uses "proftp" as PAM-servicename, but the package installs /etc/pam.d/proftpd. Shouldn't it be /etc/pam.d/proftp ?

It's a bug and will be corrected. In the meanwhile, please work around it by either using the AuthPAMConfig directive for the config file or rename the pam.d file.
