Ok, the Gimp version that comes with the openSuSE 10.3 DVD is gimp-2.2.17-40 but, there is a newer version gimp-2.2.17-41 here:

My question is, to my knowledge there has never been a YOU update for gimp on SUSE 10.3, so why is there a newer version 2.2.17-41 on the FTP server?

The builds might not have been fully in sync. I see in the pool ./CD1/suse/i586/gimp-2.2.17-40.i586.rpm, ./CD1/suse/x86_64/gimp-2.2.17-40.src.rpm and ./CD1/suse/ppc/gimp-2.2.17-41.ppc.rpm So this is just an artefact I guess. And there was no security update for gimp in 10.3 as far as I can see.
