kernel 2.4.5 + ipchains 1.3.9-249 incompatible?
Hi all, I have problems with my susefirewall. I'm using SuSE 7.1, kernel 2.4.5 and ipchains 1.3.9-249. In the bootlog I get the message 'ipchains protocol not available' and when I give the command 'ipchains -L' I get the message 'incompatible with this kernel. So I tried the original SuSEkernel, but there it is the same. On my RedHat-Maschine it works fine with kernel 2.4.4 and ipchains-1.3.10-7. I can't find this ipchains-version for SuSE and I would like to work with SuSE in the future. I would appreciate it very much, if somebody could give me a tip. This message is valid if the 2.4.x kernel was compiled without ipchains-compatibility. I must admit, that I compiled all my kernels myself (except a notebook), so I can't answer for the standard kernels of SuSE. If you consider to compile your own kernel, make sure that the options - Networking options: Network packet filtering - Netfilter Configuration: ipchains (2.2 style) support [module or static] are enabled. Heho - my kernel wont that SuSEKernel 2.4.4 shows snip ----- [*] Network packet filtering (replaces ipchains) x x x x [*] Network packet filtering debugging snap ------ and there no option for choosing older ipchains instead "iptroubles". Thats both "Network options"
If you consider to compile your own kernel, make sure that the options - Networking options: Network packet filtering ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ - Netfilter Configuration: ipchains (2.2 style) support [module or ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ static]
There is a follow up menu called "Netfilter Configuration" where you find the other option, as stated above. Martin

Probably the susefirewall version you're using doesn't load the ipchains module automatically - try the updated version ftp.suse.com://pub/suse/i386/update/7.1/sec1/SuSEfirewall-4.3-3.noarch.rpm. Or simply try adding modprobe ipchains somewhere at the beginning the firewall script. Regards, Martin
