I have got a old box which was running suse 5.x and has ( last night ) been upgraded to Suse7 All went very well despite a few silly things. However something odd is now happening... if I telnet to the box it only asks for a username at logon rather than username and a password ? Any ideas ?
Only a guess, but I had a similar problem upgrading and old RedHat, enabling shadow passwords in the process. Changing every user passwords by hand solved the problem (since a utility to do so was useful only to obtain a tight CPU loop ;_;). Chech to see if /etc/passwd and /etc/shadows contain "sane" values. Ciao, Roberto.

This happened to me also after an upgrade from one version to the next (don't remember which). I ended up fixing it by copying my password over from /etc/passwd to /etc/shadow. Oddly enough, though, only my password was affected. Somehow root's password was already moved to /etc/shadow. -- ------------------ Theo. Sean Schulze theo.schulze@okay.net
