fdisk fails with disks >32GB: no RAID

Hello, I have to set up a backup server with software RAID 5 on three Maxtor IDE 60GB discs with SUSE Linux 6.4. (2.2.14). Raidtools are installed. Problem: fdisk displays only 53000 cylinders. That seems to be "cylinders modulo 65536". checking startup messages and /proc shows correct parameters for all three drives. I know, IDE is slow, but the important point is security of large data, not speed. Does anyone know a quick solution (newest beta-kernel would do fdisk right, but is very unstable!) Thanks for all help, Bernhard
