How ever I only received the modem form my supplier well after I installed suse 8.0. I seemt o not have a /dev/modem in suse as specified in the commented line in inittab.

How can I install this modem? Use YaST --> Network/Basic --> Modem configuration. But this reminds me of Windows, haha. You better do it manually: /dev/modem is nothing else than a symbolic link to /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1 (COM1 or COM2).
