Hi, about two weeks ago I updated the kernel on a server that runs on SuSE 7.3 to k_deflt-2.4.18-262.i386.rpm. Since that time some things don't seem to work like they should, e. g. wget can't create a connection to http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub... this means that fou4s is not working correctly. The nightly cron job for fou4s spits out: Warning: wget error 1 Warning: wget error 1 (patches.cont) And I don't seem to be able to sync the time of the server using ntpdate: 14 Apr 00:15:08 ntpdate[8872]: no server suitable for synchronization found And this did not happen because the time server was down ;-) Did anyone else encounter strange problems after the recent recommended kernel update? Not me (at least), i just had the problem i reported earlier, ext3 doesn't work correctly anymore. mekong:~ # rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz k_deflt-2.4.18-262 mekong:~ # cat /etc/SuSE-release SuSE Linux 7.3 (i386) VERSION = 7.3 this is mekong.darkman.de which runs without any problems. But i noticed that on gwdg.de some dirs are moved/removed. Maybe the new directory order is your fou4s problem? Check if your network setup is okay (defaultroute is set etc.) maybe due to the reboot you lost some settings you added manually. HTH, Sven

Yes, my SuSE 7.2 system freezes unexpectedly during normal work. I decided to go back to kernel k_deflt-2.4.16-22 from late 2001. Now everything works fine, but I hope that there will be a new kernel-Update in the near future that fixes the security problems AND provides a stable system. All, I installed the updated kernel on three (3) test boxes all running 7.2. I had mixed problems on all three of them. One of them locked up frequently. No diagnostic text, no kernel panic screen... Just frozen solid. One of them fails to load a few services. The last one failed to initialize the network properly and though running ifconfig showed the network card as alive and working, you could ping out or ping him. Reverting back to the 2.4.16 kernel fixed all. With all of the problems that we all have been reporting, I cannot see how this was released as stable software... Anyone agree? Thanks :-) Drew -----Original Message----- From: Andreas Muck [mailto:fam.muck@telda.net] Sent: Monday, April 14, 2003 3:55 PM To: suse-security@suse.com Subject: Re: [suse-security] Problems with kernel update on 7.3 Hallo, out there, Am 14.04.2003 um 14:25 schrieb Andreas Otto:
