Hello, I just re-visited the SuSE web site and found the following (www.suse.com/products/susesoft/70news/70datapro.html) about the upcoming SuSE 7.0 release and was dismayed to find that 7.0 is to come with Kernel 2.2.14, which has almost enough holes in it to qualify it as Swiss Cheese. Why not 2.2.16, at least? (Yes, I realize 2.4.0 is still pre-release). Speaking of Kernel 2.4.0-test5, are there special SuSE patches I need to apply if I want to try it out with 6.4? Has anyone at SuSE packaged it as an RPM? Thanks in advance and best regards, Ken Parker (happy user of 6.4)

This surely is a typo - sorry for the confusion. Of course SuSE Linux 7.0 will ship with a 2.2.16 kernel, including many fixes from the 2.2.17-pre series. To the webmaster: please fix this ASAP! Thanks :)

At the time being, threre are no patches against 2.4.x available.
Has anyone at SuSE packaged it as an RPM?
No, not that I know of. Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany Winter in Arizona falls on a Tuesday this year.

I think you've just discovered a typo: Suse might want to check that out.
From the German page: Auch wenn er noch nicht offiziell "raus" ist: SuSE bringt schon jetzt einen Linux-Kernel, den man dank zahlreicher Erweiterungen getrost als 2.2.17-pre bezeichnen darf
Translation: the kernel could be called 2.2.17-pre, because of the improvements on the 2.2.16 kernel.

You might want to wait just two weeks. Latest news is that 2.4 will be released at then end of August.
Thanks in advance and best regards,

Two weeks?? Where did you read about this?? I've just been searching through "Kernel Traffic" http://kt.linuxcare.com/kernel-traffic/ including "Kernel Traffic #78 For 31 Jul" and did not find any reference about from Linus or any body else. And as of Kernel.org we are at "LATEST-IS-2.4.0-test5 27-Jul-2000". Just give us a tip please!! =:`)

It was published on some Dutch C-news sites. It stated that "the release of kernel 2.4 had been delayed due to problems, but was now planned for late August or early September at the lastest," or words to that amount. I actually read it on two sites, and the first one is usually pretty dependable. So if that's right I think holding our breaths for 2-4 weeks longer should be enough. I'll see if I can find some English language references to it.

Some URL's would help, do not mind English (full skills) or German (read level only). Will wait your notices, thanks.

Hi,
Hello,
<-- SNIP -->
Speaking of Kernel 2.4.0-test5, are there special SuSE patches I need to apply if I want to try it out with 6.4?
Nope, I've compilled it here and it's running fine both under 6.3 and 6.4. Also masquerading under netfilter seems to be pretty faster than it was with ipchains. I had some problems though with 2.4.0-test4 and earlier regarding networking.
Has anyone at SuSE packaged it as an RPM?
Hmmm... Not yet, but it compilled smoothly under both 6.3 and 6.4. rgrds, Bráulio Weimann Gergull

Nice to know, thanks Bráulio.

Which _compiler_ and version did you use?? Did you notice in Kernel Traffic #77 For 24 Jul ['gcc-2.91.66' Recommended For Kernel Compilation] http://kt.linuxcare.com/kernel-traffic/kt20000724_77.epl#9 in which Zack Brown writes: [In the course of discussion, Linus Torvalds mentioned that he used 'gcc-2.91.66', and that 'gcc-2.7.2' was "compiler non-grata". Richard Gooch replied, "Aha! Now I know what compiler you're using. Is there general agreement in the cabal that gcc-2.91.66 is Good[tm]?" Alan Cox and Randy Dunlap confirmed this, and the thread ended.] Is the one you use?? Thanks in advance.
