hi! 3 days ago I've written an email to you. thanks for your help! everything worked fine, except the nfs. I opened the ports 2049 and 111 completely, but I still get this error message: mount: RPC: Wartezeit abgelaufen ("waiting time expired") I tried to log everything blocked by the firewall, but it didn't work. I don't find the log file of iptables nor in /var/log/messages. These things I've already tried: 1) iptables -N no-conns-from-eth0 iptables -A no-conns-from-eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A no-conns-from-eth0 -m state --state NEW -i ! eth0 -j ACCEPT iptables -A no-conns-from-eth0 -i $DEV_EXT -m limit -j LOG --log-prefix "Bad packet from eth0:" iptables -A no-conns-from-eth0 -i ! $DEV_EXT -m limit -j LOG --log-prefix "Bad packet not from eth0:" iptables -A no-conns-from-eth0 -j DROP iptables -A INPUT -j no-conns-from-eth0 iptables -A FORWARD -j no-conns-from-eth0 2) iptables -N my_drop iptables -A my_drop -p ICMP -j LOG --log-prefix "DROP-ICMP " iptables -A my_drop -p UDP -j LOG --log-prefix "DROP-UDP " iptables -A my_drop -p TCP -j LOG --log-prefix "DROP-TCP " iptables -A my_drop -j DROP 3) iptables -A INPUT -i $DEV_EXT -f -j LOG --log-prefix "IPTABLES FRAGMENTS:" iptables -A INPUT -i $DEV_EXT -f -j DROP 4) iptables -N logdrop iptables -A logdrop -j LOG iptables -A logdrop -j DROP iptables -j logdrop can anybody tell me where I can find the log files? answers in german would be very helpful, but many thanks to all!!! Hi, I have a SuSE 7.1 box with 2.4.7 kernel. I forgot my root password (yes, i am an idiot). How can I make to reset it? I have tried to boot as "lilo: linux single" but anyway he asks me for the root password. I have tried too boot with a CDrom but with same result. Thank you and greetings Alberto Butrico Montevideo - Uruguay

I recommend using "/bin/passwd" as editor :)
reboot,
Well, I'm not sure that reboot would work correctly. I suggest to remount,ro before.
login as root with no password, reset root password.
This would offer a small window for attacker/scanners which could install a backdoor on networked systems. Don't do that except at home :) oki, Steffen -- Dieses Schreiben wurde maschinell erstellt, es trägt daher weder Unterschrift noch Siegel.

Poor boy.
How can I make to reset it?
I can tell you.

Of course.

How did you boot (boot installed system?)? You've got to boot the rescue-system. When booting is ready, you can login as root without password. You still have no access to the installed system you've got to mount it to eg. /mnt. When you enter /mnt you'll find your system. Just open /etc/passwd and delete the X-entry in the first line (root:0:X.......). Don't forget to write the file back and do a reboot without cd and have a lot of fun again... If this won't work do the same on /etc/shadow. Running this method means to delete root's password. Of course, it has to be redefined via yast or passwd-command.
